President Donald Trump called into his favorite news program this morning, Fox News's Fox and Friends, to generally pal around with the show's three adoring hosts and talk about how great he's doing as president. But when Trump commented on how it's an appropriate day to do such an interview, owing to the fact it's First Lady Melania Trump's birthday, things began to get...awkward. Mostly because it became glaringly obvious Trump wasn't well-equipped to handle such an event in his wife's life.
"I picked a very, very special day because it is Melania's birthday," he said to begin the phone interview. "I said, 'Let's do it on Melania's birthday.' Happy birthday, Melania." Perhaps sensing a chance to humanize Trump a bit, Fox and Friends host Brian Kilmeade then tossed Trump a softball question: What did he buy his special lady for her big day? Uh, well, hmmmm, ugh. Not much, if we're being honest.
"Well, I better not get into that because I may get in trouble," Trump finally responded after a pause. "Maybe I didn't get her so much. I got her a beautiful card! You know I'm too busy to be running out looking for presents, okay? But I got her a beautiful card and some beautiful flowers." What can we say, those Kanye West tweetstorms are just taking up too much of his precious time.
He did throw a compliment Melania's way, though, about how she handled herself during the recent state visit from French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte. (The press were pretty favorable as well.) "She did a fantastic job with France," he noted. "I'll tell you what, the people of France were spellbound by what happened."
Between the lack of gift-giving and the couple's most recent hand-holding catastrophe, please get ready to order some more #FreeMelania t-shirts.
