You might think your wedding party behaved like animals at your bachelorette party, rehearsal dinner, and reception, but one couple's maid of honor and best man were literal animals. Emma-Leigh and Shane Matthews apparently realized that the time-honored title of "man's best friend" can be easily rearranged into "best man," and they appointed their two Alaskan Malamutes to stand next to them on their wedding day, last month.
According to the Huffington Post, the Matthewses only considered venues that were dog-friendly. "Most venues we tried frowned upon dogs as soon as they saw the size of them or had too many rules about where the dogs could and couldn't go," Emma-Leigh, a self-professed "crazy pet mum," said. But the historic Abbey House Hotel in Cumbria, England, had no qualms about Niko and Phil strutting down the aisle and tearing up the dance floor.
"The dogs were part of every part of the wedding and didn't really leave our side," Emma-Leigh said. Niko, who made a beautiful maid of honor with pink roses attached to her collar, and Phil, who sported a sophisticated bowtie and doubled as the wedding's videographer with a GoPro attached to his collar, were walked down the aisle on leashes by a human bridesmaid and groomsman, then ran free at the reception, posing for countless photos with Emma-Leigh and Shane's human guests. The classy canines were also given a place of honor on the wedding cake: A tiny fondant Niko and Phil adorned the nature-themed cake, as did a mini version of the couple's cat, Milo, who was not allowed at the venue but, according to Instagram, dressed up for the occasion anyway.
Emma-Leigh and Shane undoubtedly avoided much of the typical wedding party drama by appointing their four-legged, drama-free friends to be best man and maid of honor — and they're not the only ones with the bright idea to include their pets in the wedding fun. Not only have cats and dogs starred in their own dramatic engagement shoots, but a Maryland couple made headlines last month when they included their "tubby tabby" in their sweet wedding photos, and New York dog mom Veronica Silva recently launched Pawfect For You, a service that takes care of your pet's involvement in your wedding from start to finish: They pick out wedding attire, offer ceremony coaching, and keep an eye on your furry guest throughout the wedding. Thankfully, it's never been easier — or more stylish — to include your fur babies in your nuptials!
