With a mother who's a dressmaker and a collection of hundreds of custom-made wedding dress designs to his name back home, Venezuelan bridal designer Angel Sanchez says his destiny was to be a bridal designer. In fact, he claims that being a wedding dress designer (the most respected fashion career one can pursue in Venezuela) has brought him luck here in America. And how can we argue with that? Having created wedding gowns for A-listers like Sandra Bullock and Eva Longoria ain't too shabby.
But it's not easy, explains the designer. "It's really difficult. They want to keep their wedding dress a secret. I couldn't even tell my mother!"
That's Angel Sanchez for you. Warm, with a sense of humor, oh and a fashion-forward eye for design ("not the pouffy American way")—something the bridal industry has been waiting for!
Here's what the designer had to say about wedding dresses at our Wedded Bits bloggers lunch:
"People are tired of strapless." And we're happy to hear it! This explains all the creative straps and bateau, scooped and pleated necklines in his spring 09 collection.
"Lace never goes out of style." So how does he keep it fresh? In his recent collection he played with iridescent floral embroidered lace over silk organza. See it here—it's absolutely stunning!
His favorite fabric is organza. His second, silk gabardine. "It's shiny but not like satin," he says. "You don't need any ornamentation with this fabric."
On the veil: "I love a simple veil with no headpiece," he says. "A bride without a veil is missing something. It's the aura of the bride."
And perhaps his greatest bit of dress shopping advice: "Listen to yourself. You have to feel a connection with your dress." —Anna Pezik
