It's no secret that Daniel Caesar's angelic voice and heartfelt lyrics have inspired incredible music this year. He's up for two Grammy awards: Best Performance for his single "Get You" and Best R&B Album for his debut Freudian. What no one could have seen coming (perhaps even Daniel Caesar himself) was that people would be so taken with his music that they'd propose in the middle of his concerts.
But that's exactly what's happening. The proof is all over social media.
It all started at his second tour stop in Washington, D.C. where he performed at The Fillmore.
Then it happened again in early November.
The third mid-concert proposal came from Jozen Cummings, a writer who reflected about the proposal on his blog Until I Get Married.
Cummings started the blog back in 2009 as he was navigating the dating scene in New York City, newly unemployed and reflecting on past relationships. His goal was to be "a voice for many unmarried men who are trying to figure out women, and the many women who are trying to figure out men." Eight years later, those who visit Cummings' blog will find that the most recent post begins with the Instagram video of his proposal.
After nearly a decade of providing relationship advice and four years of dating his now-fiancé, Gina, Cummings proposed at the concert of an artist whose debut EP came out just three years ago. Daniel Caesar was just hitting his teenage years when Cummings started the blog. So what gives?
Simply put, despite being young and new-ish to the music scene, Daniel Caesar's lyrics elicit visceral reactions of love and lust and heartache. The first mid-concert proposal happened during "Best Part" which landed on our "Best Love Songs of 2017" Spotify playlist. Caesar enlisted the help of R&B singer H.E.R. to sing lyrics like "You're the coffee that I need in the morning / You're my sunshine in the rain when it's pouring" and "Where you go I'll follow / No matter how far / If life is a movie / Oh you're the best part." Makes you want to get down on one knee, doesn't it?
Caesar and his band were crooning, "And yes, I'm a mess but I'm blessed / To be stuck with you," during the second proposal. These are lyrics from his song "Blessed," which fans heard back in September on the season finale of HBO's Insecure during a daydream montage that showed the main character marrying and settling down with her ex. Even fictional people think of marriage when Daniel Caesar's songs are playing!
"Get You," the first track of Caesar's debut album, was playing during Cummings' proposal just before Thanksgiving. Either because he's become known for his proposal-inducing tracks or because he loves a good proposal video just as much as the rest of us, Daniel Caesar retweeted Cummings' video without comment. He also retweeted Carl Chery, Head of Artist Curation at Apple Music, who was one of the first to acknowledge Caesar's effect.
Daniel Caesar is far from the only music artist to see mid-concert proposals—Katy Perry and Adele come to mind—but it seems like there's something extra special in the air. Perhaps it's just his signature combo of tear-jerker lyrics and a silky-smooth voice.
