When it comes to Halloween, there’s typically two types of people: those who have been excitedly counting down the days to Halloween since last year, or ones who have begrudgingly RSVP’d yes to a costume party. Regardless of which side you’re on, one thing’s for sure—having someone else to dress up with makes it a lot more fun.
To nail the couples costume game, we’ve rounded up some of our favorite couple halloween costume ideas.
Elvis & Marilyn
A throwback tribute is always a hit on Halloween. For a classic nod to the megastars, grab your hunka-hunka burning love and embrace your inner Marilyn for a look straight out of the Hollywood Walk of Fame. A red lip, hair grease, hip gyrations and iconic poses are a must. (Marilyn Monroe costume, $19.99, and Elvis Presley costume, $54.99, available at Party City)
Ofwarren & the Commander of Handmaid’s Tale
This Amazon series raked in five Emmy awards this year, so it doesn’t get much more 2017 than this. Aside from using makeup to recreate Ofwarren’s eye removal, this one is simple: a bonnet, a red cloak and a suit. It’s great as a last-minute couples’ costume in a bind.
Forest Gump's Forest & Jenny
You won’t need to trick-or-treat, since life itself is like a box of chocolates. For this adorably sweet DIY costume idea, rock a flower crown and a neutral, 70s-inspired frock and dress your better half in a blue plaid shirt sleeve button down, complete with a red cap and ping pong paddle.
Piper & Alex of Orange is the New Black
OITNB has been a smash hit since it first aired on Netflix in 2013, and central to the storylines are our favorite blonde/brunette combo, Pier and Alex. Orange scrubs, and a pair of thick glasses are all you’ll really need to slay this portrayal—but bonus points will undoubtedly be awarded if you bring along their undeniable chemistry.
Mario & Luigi
One of the more famous duos known across the world, Nintendo’s Luigi and Mario are not only a classic costume inspiration, but they’re quite adorable, too. Guys and gals alike can dress up like the pair, with costume options available in men’s, women’s, and unisex. Start practicing your high jumps, stat. (Mario and Lugi costumes, $52.99 each, available at BuyCostumes.com)
IT's Pennywise & Bev Marsh
While it’s heavy on the makeup, any It costume is going to do well this Halloween. Not only is it so 2017, but it’s also creepy—win-win! The couples costume will play up the concept even further, giving It a potential victim, further illustrating the film’s premise.
Dirty Dancing's Johnny & Baby
Gear up for the "Time of Your Life" (see what we did there?) and embrace your inner Baby and Johnny. A simple pink leotard or tank with a tulle skirt and curls for you, and an all-black ensemble with slicked back hair for him are all you’ll need to pay homage to the couple of the cult classic. (The original, that is.) A word to the wise—if you’re going to debut the infamous lift, be sure you’ve rehearsed it a few times first.
Star Wars's Poe & Rey
If you already know what you’re doing December 14th (The Last Jedi release day, for those who don’t know) then this is the costume for you. Two of the newest characters in the Star Wars family, Rey and Poe make a great paring for any fan of the series. (Rey costume, $28.99, and Poe Dameron costume, $54.99, available at Party City)
Stranger Things's Eleven & Joyce, or Eleven & Mike
Why wait until the Netflix hit makes its second season debut later this month? Dress up like two of the show’s stars, Eleven and Joyce. For Eleven, opt for the convenient store-bought costume, or DIY, imitating her pink dress with Peter Pan collar and, of course, a box of Eggos. For Joyce, you’ll need rainbow Christmas lights, a uniform short, and her unforgettable concerned face. For Mike: A striped polo shirt with white collar, topped with a khaki jacket. Add khaki pants or '80s-style jeans and sneakers. For the full effect, push a bike around with you. (Eleven costume, $49.99, and Joyce costume, $19.99, available at Spirit Halloween)
Marty McFly & Doc Brown
Head on Back to the Future this Halloween with costumes inspired by Marty McFly and Doc Brown. A red puffer vest and button down for Marty, and a white lab coat and crazy white wig for Doc are great places to start as you channel your inner mad scientist and his favorite side kick. You might not be able to roll up to the party in a DeLorean, but your costumes are sure to get some nostalgic laughs.
Winifred & Sarah Sanderson of Hocus Pocus
The Sanderson Sisters have pretty much been Halloween royalty since Hocus Pocus was first released by Disney in 1993. Nearly 25 years later, it’s become a fan favorite among '90s kids, and serves as a perfect influence for your Halloween costume. Whether you love Sarah, Winifred, or Mary, you can’t go wrong channeling your inner witch. After all, ‘tis the season! (Winifred Sanderson costume, $49.99, and Sarah Sanderson costume, $49.99, available at Spirit Halloween)
Beauty and the Beast's Gaston & the Beast
Turn the tables on a traditional Beauty and the Beast pairing. Instead, represent the two male leads, Gaston and the Beast. The strapping, muscular villain and the scary-yet-soft-inside Beast are sure to turn heads whether you opt for the officially licensed costumes or a DIY approach. Consider having friends dress up as Belle, LeFou, or Lumière, and bring the whole gang for a complete ensemble. (Gaston costume, $69.99, and Beast costume, $44.99, available at Spirit Halloween)
Frozen's Anna & Elsa
Part of the beauty of Halloween is that you can still dress up like a princess, even long into adulthood. Two of our favorite sisters, Anna and Elsa, are excellent costume inspirations, especially if you plan on singing “Let it Go” in tandem. (Elsa plus-size costume, $55.99, and Anna plus-size costume, $59.99, available at Party City)
Riverdale's Betty & Jughead
Not everyone ships Bughead, but for those who do, this is an ideal couples costume. Ransack your closets for a flannel, a T-shirt, a fur-lined jean jacket, and a preppy sweater-and-collared-shirt combo. Then let the Riverdale magic set in.
The Stark Family from Game of Thrones
Grab your boots, pelts, and daggers for this costume. When it comes to the Stark family tree, you have a few unforgettable characters to choose from, but you can’t go wrong with Jon Snow and Arya Stark. Bonus points if you get a friend to dress up as another character.
Madeline & Ed Mackenzie from Big Little Lies
As much screen time as Madeline Mackenzie gets, she has very few outstanding moments with Ed—one of those is their appearance at trivia night. The costume is surprisingly easy too: a Hawaiian shirt and a lei for Ed; a nightshirt-dress with pumps and an eye mask for Madeline.
Arrow's Green Arrow & Black Canary
These outfits might require some searching at costume and cosplay vendors, but you have to admit: this is an awesome couple costume! You’ll definitely stop any party in its tracks if you show up looking this lethal.
