Is there a more romantic spot in existence than a darkened movie theater where a Fifty Shades of Grey film is flickering on the screen? You've got mood lighting. You've got snacks. You've got a BDSM-packed movie that'll no way in hell pass the Bechdel test. What more could one want in a proposal spot?
While we might have a few other proposal places in mind (ones without the background noise of cracked whips and uncomfortable moans, for instance), Staten Island's Kevin Goldstein couldn't think of a more perfect place to pop the question to his sweetie. Last weekend, Goldstein proposed to Kristin Jaccarino during an 8 p.m showing of Fifty Shades Darker. Anastasia Steele, eat your heart out.
While Goldstein didn't pull off a proposal like (spoiler alert) Christian Grey's—i.e., with about a gazillion flowers and the controlling "Be mine, marry me" line (possessive much?)—the man did manage to pop the Q in a totally epic way.
Before the film began, Goldstein arranged for a fake film trailer to show, featuring none other than the groom-to-be and the father of the bride. After giving Goldstein permission to marry his daughter, Jaccarino's father told his to-be son-in-law, "Now get out of here and meet my daughter at the Atrium!" Upon hearing the name of the theater, the moviegoers finally got what was going on. Cue the shrieks and squeals.
"I was completely in shock," Jaccarino remembers of sitting in the audience. "I could tell it was something big because I recognized the inside of my house and my dad's thick Staten Island accent."
Then, Goldstein finally appeared inside the theater (with a large popcorn, no less!), where he dropped to one knee in front of his sweetie, popping the question with a double-halo engagement ring. The bride-to-be nodded her head yes as the theater burst into applause, before Christian Grey even appeared on the screen!
According to SI Live, the couple is planning to tie the knot (and not in a Fifty Shades kinda way) in December 2018, with the wedding hashtag #GoingfortheGold—a nod to the title of the fake movie in the trailer.
Oh, and in case you were wondering, Jaccarino didn't actually stick around to watch Fifty Shades Darker. The girl had an engagement to celebrate!
