News of Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas's engagement may have just broke mere days ago, but you best believe we're already daydreaming of their upcoming wedding, especially whether or not Meghan Markle will have a role in the big day.
While Meghan opted for mini page boys and bridesmaids in lieu of what most Americans think of when it comes to traditional bridal parties, Chopra likely would have been in the running if Meghan had included adult bridesmaids in her big day. Now that the tables have turned, the question remains of whether Meghan will stand by her BFF's side on her wedding day, and if she's even allowed to do so under royal protocol.
Cue royal reporter Omid Scobie, who has previously weighed in on Meghan's wedding dress and whether Princess Eugenie's wedding might be televised. In this batch of royal family predictions, Scobie reveals that Meghan could step in as a bridesmaid, but it's unfortunately not very probable given her new royal status.
"There is no protocol that dictates whether an adult female member of the British Royal Family can take on the role of a bridesmaid or maid of honor at a non-royal's wedding," Scobie told Cosmopolitan. "However, it is an unlikely scenario for one simple reason: A female royal would not be expected to walk behind a 'commoner.' This is why in the past we saw Pippa Middleton as Duchess Kate’s maid of honor, but when Pippa got married Kate read a prayer."
Not to mention, having a royal present at a wedding presents the chance of potentially overshadowing the couple, no matter how famous they may be. "There’s also the risk of taking all the attention off the bride herself!" Scobie added. "In June, all eyes were on Sweden’s Princess Madeleine instead of her close childhood friend getting married when she served as a bridesmaid."
However, given Chopra and Meghan's distance-defying and completely supportive relationship, the future bride would likely be thrilled to have her close pal present at her wedding, no matter the circumstances. And, if Meghan were asked to be a bridesmaid, there's nothing stopping her from saying yes, not even the Palace. "Should a female member of the Royal Family choose to take on a bridal party role at a friend's wedding, it would be her own decision," says Scobie. "There’s no rule that wouldn’t allow this and she certainly wouldn’t need permission or guidance from Palace aides."
