Dreaming of walking down the aisle on your wedding day with long, luscious locks? You're not alone. Whether you're planning on an intricate updo or complementing your strapless wedding dress with décolletage-grazing tresses, hair extensions are often a staple in a bride's wedding hair plan. Clip-in hair extensions, with their particular set of advantages, might be the right choice for your wedding hairstyle too. But as with anything else, it's important to do your research.

Brides spoke with Amber Fillerup Clark, blogger and owner of Barefoot Blonde Hair, for the skinny on all things clip-in hair extensions.

Here's what she had to say.

Preparation

The first time you wear hear extensions shouldn't be on your wedding day. It's recommended that you get used to the feeling, look, and weight of having extra hair ahead of your big day. Luckily, with clip-in hair extensions, that's totally doable.

If you're planning on doing your own wedding hairstyle, Fillerup says, "Clip-in hair extensions are easy to use and insert, but as with anything, the more you practice the more comfortable you become." She suggests practicing putting the wefts in and styling them ahead of time. Your bridal shower or bachelorette party is the perfect time to try some styles with your new luscious length. Even if you're leaving your hair to a pro on your wedding day, you'll need to know how to remove your clip-in hair extensions afterward. So practice makes perfect!

But don't stress: We promise you'll master the technique in no time! Fillerup says a big misconception is that hair extensions are too hard to use, but this isn't the case. "They seem intimidating and something that will take too much time," she says. "That is one thing we work to change at BFB Hair. We want everyone to feel that they can use hair extensions and feel good about their hair."

Finding the Right Extensions

All hair extensions are not created equal. In fact, buying the wrong kind can be disastrous for your tresses. First things first: Fillerup says to make sure the hair is human remy hair (considered the finest quality human hair). "You want the hair to style well and look natural," she says, explaining that 100 percent human remy hair won't melt like synthetic hair, and will last longer and thus protect your investment.

Color match is also key. "If your color match is right, the hair will blend nicely and you won't have to worry at all," Fllerup says. Be sure to color-match based on the shade your hair will be on your wedding day. If you are planning any significant changes, you can consult your colorist by bringing in samples, which many extension companies offer.

Finally, tapered edges are also important. "You don't want extensions that are blunt because it will look less natural. You want to buy them naturally tapered so you don't have to pay a stylist to blend them," Fillerup notes.

Care

Great clip-in hair extensions are an investment, and you'll want to be able to use them on more than one occasion. So, proper care is key. For maximum longevity, Fillerup emphasizes that you should treat them as you would your natural hair. "When using heat styling, use a heat protectant and avoid the highest heat setting. If your clip-in extensions are feeling dry, do a deep conditioning treatment on them. But be careful to not over-wash your extensions either. If you are wearing your extensions every day, you only need to wash them about once a month." Once a month? Yup! This is because they don't produce natural oils, like your scalp does.

You'll also want to make sure to brush them out (gently) before and after wearing. When doing so, "always start brushing them out at the bottom and then work your way up," Fillerup instructs. And, when you aren't wearing your extensions lay them flat on a counter or dresser.

Congratulations on now being a clip-in extensions expert!
