There have been plenty of epic celebrity wedding singers — everyone from Lana Del Ray and Foster the People to Stevie Wonder and Florence Welch have stepped up to the mic to perform for newlywed couples. But, in our book, the latest celebrity big-day singer takes the cake: Last April, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin quietly took to the stage at a destination wedding in France to serenade a husband and wife as they shared their first dance.
In honor of Throwback Thursday, wedding photographer Elizabeth Messina shared the above Instagram snap of Chris at the piano as he crooned out a song for Emily Lam and Kent Ho at their wedding at Hotel Du Cap in Antibes, France.
"That day when I was a few feet from #ChrisMartin & his sultry voice at #HotelDuCap as he sang the first dance song for newlyweds in France — so beautiful I could hardly remember to photography — xoxo," Messina wrote.
While it's unclear exactly which Coldplay song Chris sang, there's no shortage of hits that would have been perfect for the occasion. After all, the Grammy award-winning artist is known for his insanely-romantic ballads like "Fix You," "Yellow," and "Swallowed in the Sea."
In the video seen above, the bride shares a small snippet of Chris's tribute to the couple. Before breaking into what we can only imagine was the best first dance song ever, Chris taps out a few bars on the piano and sings, "Kent and Emily, Kent and Emily, sending love to you from us all." (See a photo of the couple dancing to the special performance, below.)
But it's not the first time the singer has taken to the wedding stage. In 2008, he and then-wife Gwyneth Paltrow performed a duet of "Cruisin'" for a couple's first dance, seen here. While Chris takes the lead on the song, Gwyneth showed off her own musical prowess as the couple happily danced before them.
