Eyeliner doesn’t have to stay in the black and brown families to be appropriate for a bride on her wedding day — colorful liner and shadow were a trend on the red carpet this week, as seen below on Kate Mara, Allison Williams and Sarah Jessica Parker, and are a fun and modern way to incorporate color into your wedding day makeup look.
Kate Mara at the premiere of the film Man Down: While it may seem surprising to call anything about Kate Mara’s dramatic look ‘understated’, her eye makeup is definitely an approachable take on the colorful trend.
After tightlining all the way around her eyes with a thin, gray line, blue/gray shades are used to create the smudgy, smokey look. This way, you have a hint of color, but aren’t going all the way into Crayola territory. Pairing the look with a light wash of pink along the cheekbones and a dramatic, matte, deep-cranberry lip keep things plenty interesting.
First, line the eyes with an emerald green eyeshadow by dipping an angled brush in water and then applying the shadow. Nexy apply gradually darkening shades of green (Allison even starts with yellow in the inner corners) to both the eyelid and under the lower lashes for this fun and funky look. A nude lip keeps all the attention on the gorgeous eyes.
Sarah Jessica Parker at the Launch of DIRECTV Now: For Sarah Jessica Parker’s version of this trend, you simply swap out a palette of blues for the usual grays and blacks you use to create a smokey eye.
First, line the eyes with a kohl black liner, and then smudge and blend shades of blue all the way around the eyes and on the eyelid, keeping the darkest shades in the outer corners. And following suite with Allison, Sarah Jessica adheres to the classic rule of keeping your lip understated if your eyes are bold.
