Either way, your proposal story is one that you’ll tell again and again for a lifetime. It’s a moment you’ll never forget for good reason, and for some because it was done in such a way that left them breathless (literally) or gave them chills (also literally) from head to toe.
Check out the stories from these five brides-to-be who share how their fiancé proposed to them in the craziest way imaginable.
1. Jumping into Marriage
“On our third anniversary of being together, my boyfriend surprised me and said we were going to go skydiving. That wasn’t something I really wanted to do but he’s an adventure junkie so I agreed and figured it would be fun. I was all about doing it until we got inside the plane and I started panicking. I was so nervous that as the plane took off, I puked. Before it was time to jump out of the plane, I started to feel like I could do this. My boyfriend turned to me and he got on one knee. He confessed his love and asked me to marry him. I smelt like puke and I hadn’t even jumped out of the plane yet. It wasn’t good timing at all but what made it even crazier was that he didn’t wait for me to answer. He immediately jumped out of the plane, telling me to give him an answer once we were both on the ground. As he jumped, I screamed yes and then got ready for my jump. When we landed on the ground, I puked two more times, before saying yes again. Quite the stomach turning experience.” —Laura S., 32
2. Scream it from a Mountaintop
“We had planned to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro together by the end of 2017. Neither of us had ever climbed a mountain before nor were in exceptional shape, but it was a far-fetched goal of ours. We did it last month and it was the hardest thing I had ever done! But what made it the best adventure was that on the seventh day, we made it to the very top. I was exhausted. I hadn’t showered in days. I was woozy from the altitude sickness and the days of physical exhaustion. I looked disgusting. But none of that mattered because we did it! As we went to take a picture, he dropped his hat on the floor, and when he went to pick it up, he stayed low on the ground. At first, I thought he was going to faint, because he was silent for a few seconds, and then, right there, at the top, he pulled out a beautiful diamond ring and asked me. I literally screamed yes, as loud as I could, from the mountaintop.” —Sam E., 28
3. Underwater Chaos
“In July, we took a trip to Key West to go scuba diving. Neither of us had ever done it before but we spent months getting certified and learning how. On the first day, I was really nervous. Someone we met said they went scuba diving and saw a shark, so I started to panic a little bit. Plus, I started to panic about going under and getting lost or being confused about which way is up. I dove first with a guide and was fine. Then Mark (my boyfriend) went, and when I saw him, he started making all these panicked faces and acting like he couldn’t breathe. I got so nervous. I swam over to him and as I got closer, he pulled out a sign that said, “Will you marry me?” I literally thought I was going to die. I was, like, what is going on right now? I tugged on him and shook my head and pointed up. When our heads were finally above the water, he pulled me close, and asked me again. I started to cry and of course said yes. A part of me wishes he just did it on land and not under the sea.” —Chrissy A., 34
4. It Was a Horror Show
“Last year on Halloween, we went to see Rocky Horror Picture Show at a local movie theatre. It was one of those Halloween experiences where everyone who goes to see the movie dresses up like they are from the movie and people sing and dance in the aisles. It’s really awesome and we’ve done it a few times before! About halfway through, the power went out in the movie theater. It was freaky but also annoying. Everyone was grumpy and the mood was a bit ruined. All of a sudden, when the power went back on, my boyfriend was somehow at the front of the theater, singing my favorite song from the movie, “Touch-A, Touch-A, Touch Me.” All of a sudden, there was a flash mob of people who joined in from each row and they had a planned dance. There I was, completely shocked and surprised. He had planned the whole thing out with the theater. At the end of the song, everyone got down on one knee, and so did he, and he pulled out a ring and asked me. The whole theater was in on it and it was the most beautiful proposal for a Rocky Horror super fan.” —Raquel P., 27
5. Mile High Love Club
“Sometimes proposals don’t go as planned. Which can maybe be a good thing. My fiancé had planned to propose to me at a giant party I was having back in Michigan for my birthday. It was happening on a Friday night, so after work on Friday, we headed to the airport. Our flight, of course, was delayed for an hour, then for three hours, which meant the birthday party for me, would happen without me. I was so upset. All my friends and family had planned to come together and celebrate at my favorite restaurant. My mom had rented out a section and decorated it. With the flight delays, we were estimated to get there at 10 p.m., when the party would be over. I sat in the corner of the airport angry, crying, and disappointed. All of a sudden, on the intercom at the airport, I heard Chris’ voice. My eyes bulged and I got confused. He said something like, “Attention passengers of flight 162 to Detroit, the flight is still delayed but there’s one passenger that I’d like to call up to the gate.” He said my name and I got up and walked toward the counter, where he was with the staff of the airline. He got off the speaker, walked toward me, and told me that his proposal was not going to go as planned, but he didn’t want to wait any longer. He popped the question in the terminal, beside strangers, who cheered and clapped. It was not the proposal of my dreams but it was crazy and different and I’m glad he did it in that exact way.” —Erin D., 33
