Chanel, Valentino, Givenchy, Valli, Dior — the Paris runways are always a source of swoon-worthy bridal style inspiration, but perhaps none more so than the couture collections, which turn the City of Light into a truly magical world worthy of the most ethereal bridal dream. To help sort through the haute-ness of it all, we asked BRIDES' Fashion Director Elle Strauss which collections she thought had the most breathtaking bridal moments.
Chanel Haute Couture Spring 2017
Karl Lagerfeld brought ruffly feathered drama at Chanel’s couture presentation, where the girls sashayed down a mirrored runway inspired by Coco Chanel’s staircase in her atelier at 31 Rue Cambon. Lily-Rose Depp — the daughter of Vanessa Paradis and Johnny Depp — closed the show in a pink cascading confection with voluminous sleeves and a corseted bodice that is sweet and romantic to the nth degree.
But the real message here was sparkle and feathers. Ostrich and marabou feathers trimmed every dress and skirt in powder pink, white or gray — the perfect inspiration for the bride looking to make a very glamorous entrance on their big day. Or, why not try incorporating feathers elsewhere, such as a chic, feathered coverup or wedding clutch?
Christian Dior Haute Couture 2017
Dior's couture show was a bridal-worthy fairy tale of mystique and romance — as well as Maria Grazia Chiuri's first haute couture collection for the fashion house. Set in the gardens of Paris’ Rodin Museum with the walls covered in foliage, the girls floated (in satin and lace bowed ballet slippers) through this wonderland wearing dramatic dresses of layered tulle and embroidery — think soft dreamy pinks, peaches and whites, midnight blues, and my favorite — green with 3D florals.
Adorning their heads and faces they wore floral or feathered masks and head dresses — worthy of a grand ball or wedding! The beauty look, which was created and styled by Peter Philips, saw girls with minimal makeup but skin with a "luminous glow” created to “bring out the play on the starry glitter.” Phillips personalized the look for each girl; in one instance, glitter was applied in a "stardust" shower on the cheekbones swept up towards the temples. This collection is perfect for the bride looking for the ultimate ethereal inspiration.
Giambattista Valli Haute Couture Spring 2017
Valli's couture collection echoed that of an exotic traveller, albeit a young and fun one. Day wear was decidedly lighter than the typical couture affair with satin embellished tunics, which were worn as a short dress or paired with pants and metallic sandals — perfect for your destination wedding look.
Evening wear saw voluminous and fluffy tulle that floated down the runway with a delicate and fresh approach in the form of bridal favorite the high-low trend. We can't think of a better way to show off those long tanned legs!
