Two years ago, Becky Turney and her family suffered a heartbreaking loss: Becky's 19-year-old son, Triston Green, passed away. But her now husband gave her the ultimate wedding gift and the surprise of a lifetime on her big day: a chance to meet the man who received her late son's heart.
Becky’s groom, Kelly Turney, secretly flew Jacob Kilby from San Diego to Alaska to meet Becky in person for the first time. Kilby, who was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, has suffered from heart complications his entire life. Two years ago, after experiencing a heart attack, he was placed on the transplant list until he was matched with Triston's heart. Though Kilby and Becky had spoken on the phone and exchanged online messages a handful of times, they had never met in person.
“I lost my mind. I squealed like a little girl. I jumped up and down. It was incredible,” Becky said in an interview with TODAY.
Wedding photographer Amber Lanphier, owner of Love Adventured, captured the beautiful exchange between the two, including the moments when Becky first met Kilby, and when listened to his new heart with a stethoscope. The photos have already gone viral since their wedding on Friday.
Kelly spent months planning the surprise, and eventually asked Kilby to be one of his groomsmen during the ceremony.
The exchange didn't leave anyone at the ceremony with a dry eye.
“I got yelled at quite a bit for messing up people’s makeup,” Kelly said.
“Everyone has a legacy, but to see how Triston changed Jacob’s life is just incredible...It makes you super proud," Becky said.
