Earlier this year, when she said yes to her boyfriend's proposal, Vieneese Stanton never imagined that she'd have a hospital wedding—but that's exactly what happened.
Stanton's father was diagnosed with leukemia in February and has since been in and out of the hospital for treatment that has done little to improve his health. The original plan was for a fairytale wedding in April, but with recent updates from his doctors looking bleak, Stanton moved up the date—and drastically changed the location.
"Given the news of my father's life expectancy (and with the help of an AMAZING nurse team), we were able to have a surprise wedding so my Dad could attend. The nurse team kept the wedding a secret from my Dad, so this whole day was a surprise to him," Stanton told Love What Matters in a story that was shared on their Facebook page. "It was a such a beautiful day."
The surprise hospital wedding, while different than her original vision, was all that Stanton could ask for and more. "We have both dreamed of him walking me down the aisle to my groom— and that moment finally happened. This was truly, best day of my life!"
Doctors placed Stanton's father in hospice care around the time of the wedding due to an infection in his lungs that they believe will eventually worsen and make it hard for him to breathe. Even after his medical team gave him just weeks to live because of his condition, Stanton says "he still has the will, the spunk, and the humor to be completely alive."
Even though this was her big day, Stanton saw this as an opportunity for her to support her dad just like he's supported her throughout her life. She had a message for him, too: "Dad, I love you more than you know, and I am going to be by your side for every step of this process."
