Looking to add a hint of drama to your bridal beauty look? Rocking a red lip on your wedding day is sure to make a bold and glamorous statement — think Old Hollywood starlets, like Greta Garbo and Marilyn Monroe. "When wearing a saturated color like red, it's important to keep the rest of your makeup palette neutral," says Laura Fischer, makeup artist and bluemercury beauty expert. "Let the focus be on the lip and stick to soft earth tones on the eyes, romantic, wispy lashes and a warm, radiant glow to your skin."

Ready to go rouge? Just as important as learning how to properly apply red lipstick is finding the right shade, finish and formula. Here, Fischer's step-by-step guide (plus a few product picks) to help you achieve a picture-perfect pout and keep it looking flawless all night long.

Step 1: Exfoliate
It's essential to start with a smooth canvas. Begin by using a gentle lip scrub to remove any rough patches and dry skin. (Lip scrub, $24, Sara Happ)

Step 2: Prime
The number one trick to avoid fading and bleeding? Apply a conditioning lip primer on and around the lip to fill in any fine lines and give the perfect base for your lip color. (Flawless lip primer, $28, Trish McEvoy available at bluemercury)

Step 3: Define
Lightly line and fill in your lip with a nude pencil that matches your natural lip color. "This will help to keep the look more modern and less overdrawn," explains Fischer. ("Les Crayon Levres" precision lip definer in Natural, $31, Chanel)

Step 4: Apply
To ensure a kiss-proof pout, choose a matte red shade and apply the color with a lip brush for ultimate precision. If needed, add a second coat to make sure the color is even. ((Retractable lip brush, $28, Bobbi Brown available at bluemercury)

Step 5: Perfect
Clean up any uneven edges by applying a water resistant concealer around the lipline with a small, detail brush. This will give extra definition and make the lip color pop. ("Immaculate Complexion" concealer stick, $25, NARS)

Laura Mercier Setting Powder

Step 6: Set
Take a tissue and lightly lay over top of the lip. Pick up a bit of translucent powder with a loose brush, tap off the excess and dust over the tissue to set the color and absorb any excess oils. (Translucent loose setting powder, $38, Laura Mercier available at bluemercury)

Step 7: Highlight
To add that extra wow factor, apply a cream highlighter just above the Cupid's bow and on the center of the bottom lip. This is a great trick to fake a fuller pout without adding gloss and risking the chance of your lip color smudging throughout the night. ("Sheen" liquid lumiere, $39, Chantecaille available at Nordstrom)
