Blue eyeshadow often gets a bad rap, conjuring images of ’90s frosted lids, paired with brown lip liner. But the latest interpretations are anything but dated. A scroll through Instagram reveals a bevy of modern, bridal-worthy twists, from saturated cobalt and icy blue to dusky smokey eyes and winged liner.
That said, there is a right and a wrong way to wear this hue—particularly when it comes to your wedding. Here are a few things to keep in mind: Not all shades are the same. “I like soft, washed-out shades on the pewter side, or in the aqua or teal family, especially for fair-skinned brunettes (and some blondes) with brown or gray eyes,” says celebrity makeup artist Erin Guth. Brides with darker complexions can pull off more intensely pigmented tones.
It’s also important to consider the texture and finish of your shadow. Glitter, matte, and gloss finishes all deliver very different effects. As for the rest of your face, keep cheeks and lips on the subtle side. And of course, avoid matching your makeup to your outfit, which shouldn’t be a problem given that you’re wearing a white wedding dress—unless you choose to rock a colorful frock.
