Sherlock is officially off the market! Benedict Cumberbatch, a modern-day British heartthrob known for his roles in Star Trek into Darkness and the title character in the TV series Sherlock, announced his engagement to theater director and actress Sophie Hunter today.
For a man with a rabid Internet following, his method of announcement was surprisingly traditional: He had a note printed in the "Forthcoming Marriages" section of the births, deaths and marriages column of the British newspaper The Times.
The notice in the U.K. newspaper is headed Mr B.T. Cumberbatch and Miss S.I. Hunter and says, "The engagement is announced between Benedict, son of Wanda and Timothy Cumberbatch of London, and Sophie, daughter of Katherine Hunter of Edinburgh and Charles Hunter of London."

So far, there have been no more details on the proposal or wedding date, but Cumberbatch's rep told People, "I am delighted to confirm this morning's announcement that Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter are engaged."
Cumberbatch and Hunter reportedly met while filming a movie about Charles Darwin called Burlesque Fairytales in 2009. They have kept their relationship mostly under wraps since, but made their first major public appearance together in June at the French Open.
The former bachelor is currently starring with Keira Knightley in The Imitation Game, and is also known for his role in last year's Oscar-winning film 12 Years a Slave.
