Hamilton fans were overjoyed to hear the news this past January that two of the Broadway show’s stars, Anthony Ramos and Jasmine Cephas Jones, had gotten engaged. As it turns out, there’s so much more to the actor's proposal than they originally shared, and lucky for us, Ramos captured it all on film!
The Godzilla: King of the Monsters star shared a five-minute, 30-second clip from their special moment to YouTube on Thursday, May 23.
“I decided to pop the question out front of one of Jasmine’s favorite castles in England, Arundel Castle,” he wrote in the video caption. “She didn’t see it coming. I’m so thankful that our families could be there to witness it! This was honestly one of the best days of my life. Big thank you to the friends and family that helped make it happen. Mad Love.”
As he explains in the clip, his bride-to-be’s entire family was in on the surprise, which took place on December 24, 2018.
Ramos worked on the proposal for months, shopping for rings as early as March of last year and keeping Cephas Jones’s loved ones, including mom Kim Lesley, in the loop all the while.
His planning paid off—his longtime love appeared shocked at the moment he dropped to one knee, yelling out, “WHAT?”
The moment was an emotional one for the couple, with Ramos tearing up as he spoke from the heart. “I love you so much. I want to spend the rest of my life with you,” he told his beloved. “You’re the angel of my life. Will you marry me?”
Cephas Jones, for her part, was blown away, shrieking, “What!” and “Oh, my God!” before giving an emphatic “Yes! Yes!”
“It fits, hopefully?” the nervous groom-to-be asked as she placed her stunning new bling on her finger. “Yes!” Cephas Jones confirmed before sharing a smooch with her new fiancé as her family members cheered them on from the background.
“I’m absolutely relived,” Lesley gushed of her daughter’s engagement. “I’ve been so nervous for weeks, and extraordinarily happy. Anthony told me just before one of his gigs in New York City, and we were both crying, sitting there as he was telling me,” she revealed.
Kim said that Ramos also honored her one request to have the proposal happen in front of Cephas Jones’s grandmother, Nan.
“I’ve been planning since like, March,” Ramos told the cameraman after the fact. “Looking at rings, trying to find the right one, you know, building it, and saving money for it, and working extra hard, you know, doing this, doing that, trying to like, save up, to hopefully make this moment perfect. ... I’m just so excited to spend the rest of my life with her.”
Afterward, the group celebrated with a well-deserved toast from their loved ones.
Watch the proposal, below.
Cephas Jones announced her engagement to her costar on January 4, 2019. “My beloved Anthony,” she began. “On Christmas Eve you got down on one knee and proposed to me in front of my favorite castle in Arundel that I used to visit all the time as a child. It brought tears to my eyes because I don’t get to see my family in England that I’m so close with that much because we are an ocean away, but they got to witness this amazing event in our lives. And what a moment it was!! All because of you. ... I will NEVER forget this magical trip for as long as I live.”
Ramos also shared the exciting news with a ring selfie of himself with his fiancée in front of the Eiffel Tower and a sweet song.
“Cause they can write stories / And they can sing songs / But they don't make fairy tales sweeter than ours / And they can climb mountains high into the sky / But they can't take the world / Oh, like we can take the world. ... I love you Jas ... Thank you for saying yes to writing stories together for the rest of our lives. I'm honored and Blessed to marry you.”
