Those first few anniversary gifts are always tough to shop for — especially when trying to stick to tradition. As newlyweds, you totally want to please your spouse with a meaningful memento of your first happy years of marriage. But when trying to buy according to the traditional presents (i.e. paper, cotton, leather, fruit...), spousal shopping suddenly becomes near impossible! Who came up with these anyway? Are you just supposed to head to the local Farmer's Market for year number four? SNL alum Andy Samberg seems to have run into the same dilemma while anniversary shopping for his singer-songwriter wife, Joanna Newsom, and has come up with some creative (and hilarious!) solutions!
According to Entertainment Tonight, for their past two anniversaries since tying the knot in September 2013, the couple decided to stick to the traditional anniversary gifts — paper for the first and cotton for the second. And during his recent appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Samberg revealed his rather interesting take on tradition! "So [for] cotton, I got her a 'Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer' sweatshirt," the Brooklyn Nine-Nine actor shared. "[For] paper, I wrote on a piece of paper 'We can buy that table that you want.'" If you ask us, Samberg's gifts sound like something straight out of an SNL skit!
While we can't decide if Samberg's paper anniversary gift is technically cheating or not, there's still something super sweet about sticking to this tried-and-true tradition. If you're stuck on what to get your spouse for your first wedded year (while patiently waiting for the 60th diamond anniversary, of course!), try tickets to see his favorite sports team, a photo album, or these other stellar suggestions. Or you could always steal a page from Samberg's playbook — we won't tell!
