An Indoor San Francisco Wedding with Gorgeous Garden Vibes

When Molly Sundstrom first met Kirk Lacob on Cinco de Mayo in 2013, she had no idea it was a set-up. “A friend of mine, who works with Kirk, had invited a few single friends to a Rolling Stones concert to see who would hit it off,” she recalls. “No one told me about the plan, which actually meant I was relaxed and could be myself.” And by the end of the night, she and Kirk were officially an item. Four and a half years later, the pair was walking their dog along the Embarcadero in San Francisco when Kirk stopped in front of a sculpture that Molly loved. “He almost never stops there, and I was so confused when he was the one accusing me of not appreciating the view,” says Molly. “The next thing I knew, he was on one knee! I said yes, and when I turned around I saw our families standing behind me.”

For their wedding on July 21, 2018, the couple wanted the opposite of a destination event—“The more people who could take taxis or Uber, the better,” says Molly—and went so local that a few guests even walked from their homes to the Four Seasons Hotel San Francisco. “It was the perfect place for our 295-person guest list,” says the bride. And while an outdoor wedding was almost out of the question within San Francisco’s city limits, the bride brought the outdoors in and created a modern garden vibe within the sleek hotel.

Kirk and Molly’s wedding invitation was blind-embossed with an elevation drawing of San Francisco’s coastline—including the area where the couple got engaged. A custom wax seal of the Golden Gate Bridge added a pop of color to the suite and introduced the day's signature green hue.

“Kirk surprised me by having elements of our invitation design printed on the lining of his jacket,” says Molly of the groom’s custom navy blue tuxedo from Stitched in Las Vegas. The groom, also an avid sneaker collector, paired his tux with shoes he’d spent months tracking down: black velour and gold zipper “Kirk” sneakers by Giuseppe Zanotti.

The bride also wore sneakers (specifically, a pair of white ones by Stuart Weitzman) with her Divine Atelier dress. “I didn’t try on many dresses, and knew I wanted something simple,” says Molly. “My salesperson pulled this sample from the back, saying she’d yet to find the right bride for it. It fit me like a glove and I bought it on the spot!” The raw silk gathered dress had delicate lace accents and pearls draped across the back.

The flowers paired pale pink and white blooms with seasonal greenery and dried grasses. The boutonnieres mixed in scabiosa pods and bunny tails, while the bouquets combined cafe au lait dahlias, cherry caramel phlox, garden roses, scabiosa, and ranunculus. The couple’s sisters served as bridesmaids, wearing rose-colored dresses from Show Me Your Mumu.

Inside the hotel's ballroom, this lush ceremony set-up was as close as Molly could get to a garden wedding. “Our florist Amanda Vidmar created this stunning floating chuppah out of delphinium and smilax, and we lined the aisle with potted plants from The Plant Library,” says Molly. There were a number of NBA players in attendance, so the altar was set on a stage so every guest would have a perfect view. “My dad had a health scare a few months before our wedding, and getting to walk down the aisle with him made me so grateful for his health and his presence,” adds the bride.

As the ceremony ended, the first notes of “All You Need is Love” began. “Kirk had no idea, but I’d hidden members of the Benicia Jazz Band and singers amongst our guests," Molly says. "They popped up for the recessional to recreate the wedding scene from Kirk’s favorite movie, Love Actually.”

Crushed velvet curtains led to cocktail hour, where cocktails were served out of ice luges filled with vibrant floral arrangements.

The guest list included a few familiar faces from the Golden State Warriors, where Kirk works, including Steph Curry, assistant coach Willie Green, and assistant coach Bruce Fraser.

The San Francisco street car that graced the lining of Kirk’s jacket also appeared on custom cocktail napkins.

“We had to do something fun with Kirk’s sneaker collection!” says Molly. A few of his favorite kicks were filled with playful flowers and paired with tags identifying the shoe and sharing a fun fact about the couple. The shelves housing the sneakers were set behind an acrylic escort card board.

The ceremony space was flipped for dinner, with long tables topped in soft white linens and paired with warm wooden chairs. Forest green napkins popped amongst textured gold flatware. The organic centerpieces added another touch of color, with pink dahlias and roses paired with zinnias, phlox, and dried grasses. Place cards were tied to each menu with gold thread.

“We had a saxophonist play during the ceremony and cocktail hour, but he knew our DJ and ended up staying to play with him all night!” says Molly. “It gave our dance party a really unique feel. Late that evening, they treated guests to their favorite bites from Dumpling Time.

“The best thing we did was hire vendors we love and let them showcase their talent,” says Molly. “I’m not a florist, so why would I micromanage the flowers? Everyone blew us away with what they came up with.”
