Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin set fire to the rumor mill last week when they were spotted at New York City's marriage bureau, prompting the Internet to believe that they had quietly married in a low-key civil ceremony. Even Baldwin's own uncle Alec Baldwin fell victim to the gossip, the actor revealed at the 2018 Emmy Awards.
"They went off and got married, and I don’t know what the deal is!" the Saturday Night Live actor said to Access on the Emmys red carpet.
If you're thinking that the elder Baldwin just spilled the beans on some major family scoop, hold that thought. The 60-year-old proved he might not be the most reliable source of information, stating that he and his wife, Hilaria, text with Hailey "every now and then" and have only met Bieber "one time."
Not to mention, Hailey herself took to Twitter to refute the claims that she and her pop-star fiancé left the courthouse with a marriage license. "I understand where the speculation is coming from, but I’m not married yet!" the 21-year-old model wrote in a since-deleted tweet.
Plus, Hailey had previously revealed that she envisions a California woodland ceremony with "lights everywhere" for her wedding to Bieber, the complete opposite of the Manhattan courthouse scene. But a friend of the couple told People that the couple feels "a civil ceremony and their 'real' wedding are two separate things"—adding even more confusion to the mix.
One thing that is for certain? Alec Baldwin won't be giving his soon-to-be nephew-in-law any speeches on how to treat his niece. "That’s not my job," he told Access at the Emmys. “She has a dad [his brother, Stephen Baldwin], and I'm sure he has a few paragraphs about that himself, so I'm not worried."
