In case you haven't heard it yet: October is totally the new June! It's not just the pretty weather that's luring more and more engaged girls to ditch the summer months in favor of fall, there's a whole slew of other reasons to say "I do" to an autumn wedding (just think about the crazy amazing cake flavors!). Here, some serious reasons for why fall weddings are just as amazing as summer ones.
1. It's good for your hair
As wedding planner Jason Mitchell, author of the book Getting Groomed, points out, fall offers couples (and their guests too!) a break from the summer humidity, which is great for your locks. Hair stays in place better and is less likely to frizz up or fall flat on your big day.
2. The chance of rain isn't as high
Considering an al fresco wedding? Well, you're in luck! "Fall isn't nearly as rainy as summer, so if you're in an area that isn't super cold, you have a more sure bet for the outdoors," reveals Mitchell.
3. The color palette is nature's finest
If you're getting hitched in a state that sees all four seasons or at least gets a good fall, there's no way you'll be able to resist the rich colors of autumn, says celebrity wedding planner Donnie Brown of Donnie Brown Weddings and Events in Dallas, Texas. " The oranges, browns and rusts mixed with the yellows, golds and creams are simply sublime."
4. You can't beat the smells
There's seriously nothing quite like the crisp scent of an autumn day, a huge advantage of fall weddings, according to Brown. The burning fireplaces, fallen leaves, cinnamon and nutmeg, apple trees — the list goes on.
5. Or the food (it's harvest season, after all!)
Organic, locally grown, seasonal cuisine is all the wedding rage right now, and luckily, the autumn months literally offer a harvest of menu options to bring your fall wedding to life, notes wedding planner Amy Shey Jacobs, President of Chandelier Events. "Think savory, comfort cuisine for this time of year, like maple-cured bacon wrapped dates, a first course soup like butternut squash and apple and a decadent entree like short ribs served over polenta." You can even roast veggies on an open bonfire, she says.
6. The seasonal cake flavors are to die for
Like melt in your mouth delicious! As Jacobs describes, fall calls for chocolate devils food cake with a hazelnut buttercream or an apple spice cake with cinnamon cream cheese frosting. "You also can't forget naked cakes decorated with seasonal fruit like late harvest grapes, figs and apples or a tiered country buttercream or chocolate ganache."
7. The foliage is absolutely gorgeous
Design-wise, there's so much you can do with a fall wedding. "While the season may not offer local blooming branches, it does provide gorgeous foliage that can be suspended above tables or used as centerpieces with hanging candles," says Jacobs. To amp up the glam, she recommends doing some DIY gilded leaves as seating cards or having a quilt patch guest book.
