The 12 Cutest Couple Moments in Recent Oscars History

The Oscars may be commonly referred to as "Hollywood's biggest night," but based on the countless romantic moments that have happened throughout the ceremony's 91-year history, it may as well be called Hollywood couples' biggest night. Sure, the Academy Awards haven't yet played host to a spontaneous proposal (the 2018 Emmys are the reigning champions there), nor is it typically the event of choice for new couples to make their red carpet debuts, but there are still plenty of cute couple moments that have taken place during the ceremony.

In 1989, for example—incidentally, the last time the Oscars went hostless before this year's event—several A-list couples teamed up to present awards. Geena Davis and Jeff Goldblum, Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith, and Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell (the only pair in this group that are still together) all took the stage to hand out statuettes to adorable effect; sadly, despite these duos' obvious chemistry, real-life couples haven't often been used as presenting pairs since. Instead, in recent years, the majority of those sweet Oscars moments have taken place either on the red carpet before the ceremony kicks off, or in heartfelt acceptance speeches.

Here, in no particular order, are 12 of the most romantic moments in the last decade of Oscars history.

Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka

Harris and Burtka have only walked one Academy Awards red carpet together, but they definitely made it count. On their way into the 2015 ceremony, for which NPH served as host, the pair sported perfectly coordinating tuxedos and took breaks in between photo ops to straighten each other's bow ties. Clearly, they're a match made in Hollywood heaven.

Chrissy Teigen and John Legend

Toward the very end of the 2017 Oscars, as Casey Affleck was delivering his acceptance speech after receiving the Best Actor award, the cameras panned to the audience, in which, just over Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's shoulder, Teigen could be seen taking a not-so-sneaky power nap on her husband's shoulder. The moment sparked a flood of memes and several jokes from Teigen herself. As hilarious (and relatable) as the snooze was, the cutest part was how easily Legend transformed from Oscar-winning musician to pillow when his wife needed to rest her head.

Jason Sudeikis and Olivia Wilde

Back when Wilde was pregnant with her and Sudeikis's first child, son Otis, they walked the red carpet at the 2014 Oscars together, and Sudeikis couldn't keep his eyes off his fiancée. Pretty much the only time he let go of her hand or waist was this sweet moment, when he stepped back to conduct an impromptu photoshoot of his own—earning him the title of quintessential Instagram boyfriend before Instagram boyfriends were even a thing.

Gina Rodriguez and Joe LoCicero

At last year's ceremony, all eyes were on Rodriguez, who walked the red carpet in a jaw-dropping, princess-worthy ball gown. Though seemingly impossible to top that gorgeous gown, Rodriguez's adorable PDA with LoCicero may have done so. As an added bonus, this appearance may have served as Rodriguez's engagement ring's red carpet debut: Though she and LoCicero didn't confirm their engagement until several months later in August 2018, the sparkly band she sported at the Oscars certainly got the rumor mill turning.

Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender

Though the notoriously private married couple haven't walked a red carpet together since wrapping up promotional duties for their 2016 film The Light Between Oceans—the movie during which they first began dating—they were both in attendance at the 2016 Oscars, where they were each nominated for awards, and where they sat together, despite walking in separately. Fassbender lost in the Best Actor race, but Vikander won Best Supporting Actress, and though she left Fassbender out of her acceptance speech, she indulged in a rare moment of PDA by quickly kissing her then-boyfriend before heading to the stage to collect her trophy.

Christian Bale and Sibi Blazic

Bale and Blazic have been married for nearly 20 years, and it's only made their relationship stronger. While accepting the Best Supporting Actor award for his role in The Fighter in 2011, Bale was cool, calm, and collected until he turned the focus to his wife, at which point he suddenly had to hold back tears. "And of course, mostly, my wonderful wife," he said, choking up. "I didn't think I was like this!" he quipped, before continuing, "My wonderful wife, who's my mast through the storms of life. I hope I'm likewise to you, darling."

Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel

Timberlake and Biel, too, have only attended one official Oscars ceremony together, and they seemed to be unable to contain their excitement about it. On the red carpet at 2017's event, as Biel posed and smized for the waiting cameras, Timberlake jokingly hid behind his wife, poking his face over her shoulder and sticking his arms and legs out at strange angles. Hey, if you're only going to go to the Oscars once, you might as well get the best photos possible out of it!

Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux

Apparently, photobombing isn't just for the red carpet—and isn't limited only to crashing your S.O.'s photoshoot. While seated at the 2015 Academy Awards, then-couple Aniston and Theroux spotted Jennifer Lopez, who was seated in front of them, taking a selfie, and couldn't resist popping their faces into the frame. In her Instagram caption, J.Lo referred to the pair as "my favorite couple Jennifer and Justin," which, sigh. 'Tis better to have loved a celebrity couple and lost than never to have loved at all.

Meryl Streep and Don Gummer

Streep rarely speaks about her husband of more than 40 years, and indeed, Gummer, a sculptor, seems most comfortable staying behind the scenes. But in her acceptance speech for her third Oscar, 2012's Best Actress award for her role as Margaret Thatcher, Streep couldn't resist giving a sweet shout-out to her partner. After making a few jokes about her many nominations, she said, "First I'm going to thank Don, because when you thank your husband at the end of the speech they play him out with the music, and I want him to know that everything I value most in our lives you've given me." Cue the awws.

Emily Ratajkowski and Sebastian Bear-McClard

EmRata shocked the world in February 2018 when she announced in a shockingly casual series of Instagram posts that she and Bear-McClard had tied the knot in a civil ceremony in NYC. Barely a week later, the newlyweds made headlines yet again when they made their red carpet debut—not even as a married couple, but their first joint appearance ever—at the annual Vanity Fair Oscars party. The actual Academy Awards may be a bit too formal for a new couple's debut, but clearly, the after-parties are fair game.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie

So much has changed in the span of one decade, but back in 2009, it was the golden age of Brangelina. That year both were nominated for awards: Pitt for Best Actor for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Jolie for Best Actress for Changeling. Neither won, but that didn't stop them from taking home the award for cutest couple. "We've been planning on this for months," Pitt joked to People on the red carpet about their big night out without their six kids. "I like to think of it more as a date," Jolie added. "We're very comfortable tonight and just happy to be out, and it's a nice night."

Denzel Washington

The 2018 Emmys may have played host to an actual real-life proposal, but just a few months earlier, the 2018 Oscars were the site of a kinda, sorta, probably not official at all wedding ceremony. During a break between awards, host Jimmy Kimmel led a group of unsuspecting tourists along the front row of the Dolby Theatre, including the instantly famous "Gary from Chicago" and his fiancée, Vicki. First, Vicki stopped to get a kiss on the cheek from Ryan Gosling, then Gary posed for a selfie with Mahershala Ali, and finally, Vicki asked Denzel Washington if he'd be the best man at their upcoming wedding. Washington did them one better: While staring solemnly into the phone on Vicki's selfie stick, he quipped, "I now pronounce you husband and wife. Kiss the bride." And they all lived happily ever after.
