Simone Biles and Jonathan Owens' Relationship Timeline

They say that when you know, you know, and if anyone has ever embodied that statement, it’s Simone Biles. It took the Olympic gold medalist just one day to realize she had found the love of her life when it came to her fiancé, Jonathan Owens. "The day after I met Jonathan, I told my best friend Rachel that I was going to marry him ... I just knew," she wrote on Instagram on March 8, 2022.

The couple, who met online at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and got engaged on Valentine’s Day in 2022, is planning a 2023 wedding ceremony. In the meantime, however, they’re seemingly enjoying every minute of each other’s company. "We're with each other 24/7, so I feel like now when we're not with each other it's almost weird. We're always texting or calling each other. It's kind of gross in a way," Biles told Today in February 2022. Read on for all of their sweetest relationship moments ... so far.

December 2019: A Missed Connection

Though Biles didn’t officially meet her man until March 2020, she later discovered that she had had a near run-in with him one year earlier. She shared a throwback on her Instagram Stories in January 2022 that showed her on the field at NRG Stadium for a 2019 Texans game ... with Owens standing directly behind.

"Okay how CRAZY is this photo," she wrote. "December 2019. Texans had me for homefield advantage and I lead the team out of the tunnel ... But look who’s behind me. @jowens_3. God works in mysterious ways."

March 2020: Modern Meeting

Despite their near-miss in 2019, Owens claims to have had no knowledge about his now-fiancée's celebrity prior to embarking on a romance with her. "I didn’t know who she was," he told Texas Monthly in June 2021. "I just hadn’t heard of her, and when I told her that, that’s one of the things she liked."

In fact, as Biles explained to the Wall Street Journal one month later, it was she who made the first move. "He would say I slid into his DMs," she said. "I saw him and I was like, 'Oh, he’s pretty cute,' so I said hi ... and then I saw that he was in the Houston area, so we started chatting a little bit, and then we went to hang out a week or two later."

March 2020: A COVID Romance

With their romance blossoming in the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, their options to hang out were limited. So Biles’ sister, Adria, reportedly helped to move things along, grabbing her sibling’s phone per WSJ to ask Owens to join a lake house trip, which both he and his English bulldog obliged.

Biles spoke about their early days of getting to know each other to Access Hollywood in September 2021, saying, "We would just go to his house or my house and bring the dogs, he has a bulldog, I have two bulldogs, so they all played, and it was really, like, simple and easy." She added, "It was during the pandemic so we kind of had that time to ourselves, see if we like each other ... and it kinda worked. We kind of were just like magnets, so."

Owens agreed, sharing a similar sentiment with Today in February 2022, telling the outlet, "We ended up hanging out right before the pandemic. It was one of the few times in her life where everything was just shut off and she couldn’t do anything. So we used it to get to know each other—really get to know each other. It created our bond and made it stronger. Now I’m so thankful."

April 2020: Getting in Deep

Owens admitted to Today that by April 2020, he was already well on his way to being swept off his feet by his new paramour—and so was his dog. When asked when he knew he was falling for the star, he replied, "Probably about a month in, when we were really kind of hanging out every weekend."

From there, Owens said things progressed even further. "We just kind of started hanging out more and more and you start to want to see a person … I started to want to see her more," he shared. Most importantly, he added, "My dog really loved her."

August 2020: Insta-Official

Biles and Owens first shared their loved-up status with the world in August 2020, when the gymnast posted an affectionate photo of herself inside the ball player’s arms, writing, "It’s just us."

September 8, 2020: His and Hers

One month later, Owens also shared a couple’s photo on his social media, captioning an adorable snap of the two cuddled up in front of a mirror, "Now you rockin with a real one."

December 25, 2020: Holiday Magic

The football player revealed on Christmas 2020 that he not only spent his holiday with his significant other, but they also got into the spirit with matching pajamas. "Always good to spend Christmas with the fam," he captioned a selfie Biles took of them in their themed ensembles.

January 22, 2021: Rave Review

Biles gave her beau a perfect 10 in the boyfriend department during an interview with Today’s Hoda Kotb in January.  "He’s a real man," she gushed. "I just, I love him. We have a great time together."

Beyond that, the Olympian revealed that he was just the right person for her, specifically. "Our personalities match right up," she said. "We have the same sense of humor. And he’s just great. He’s an athlete, too, so we really understand each other and I think that’s why our relationship has been seamless."

March 2021: You Better Belize It

In March, the couple jetted off on a tropical vacay. "I love you more than I love Belize, and that’s a lot," Biles captioned a sweet photo of herself leaning up against her significant other in a sunny island setting.

March 14, 2021: Birthday Love

Owens had a super sweet message for his lady on her 24^th birthday, which he shared with the world via an Instagram selfie of the two. "Got the hottest chick in the game wearin' my chain," he proudly wrote, adding, "I’m so excited for what the future holds for us and I can’t wait to celebrate many more with you. I love you baby."

June 7, 2021: A New Stan

Owens got to see a whole new side of his girlfriend in June when he was finally able to see her compete. Needless to say, he was impressed, writing on Instagram, "What an amazing experience. You didn’t disappoint. It’s so cool that I get to watch you do what you love, and be the best at that." He added, "I’m proud of you my lil champ."

June 15, 2021: A Match Made in Heaven

Owens couldn’t help but fawn over his girlfriend in an interview with Texas Monthly in June 2021. "This was a match made in heaven," he raved. "There’s no better person for me. She loves me, she’s so affectionate. I just love that. And it’s just intoxicating seeing how much work she puts into everything."

He also spoke to Biles’ demeanor, saying, "Her energy is something. She’s always happy, giggly, bubbly. If I’ve had a tough day at the office, I wouldn’t want to take that home to her. Her personality, man."

July 22, 2021: Sending Love From Afar

Biles didn’t let the fact that she was in Japan for the Olympics keep her from sending love to her significant other on his big day. "Here in Japan it is already my favorite person’s birthday. HAPPY 26th BIRTHDAY BABE," she wrote. “@jowens_3 I love you so much. Can’t wait to celebrate you when I get home! Thanks for keeping me sane during the craziest times. An ear to vent to, someone to share fun times with and make the best of memories 🖤 Not sure how I got so lucky and what I’d do without you! But I hope you have the best day ever. July 29, 2021: Showing Support

A few days later, it was Owens’ turn to lift up his lady after she withdrew from the final individual all-around competition at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics following a case of the "twisties"—a condition described by aerial athletes as the feeling of being lost in the air, making it difficult to perform tricks to normal standards. "That's why I took a step back because I didn't want to do something silly out there and get injured," Biles reportedly explained at a news conference.

For her boyfriend, who was watching from afar, her shaky vault was difficult to watch. "It was hard for me to really understand what she was going through because I’m not on that stage and dealing with those pressures and everything, but I just try to be as understanding as possible," he reportedly said at the time. "I was sick for her, just because I can see her face, I kind of know her facial expressions, I can kind of read her lips and kind of know what was going on and kind of what she was telling her coach," Owens said. "So I was sick to my stomach because she wasn’t able to go out there."

Still, the athlete said he "was proud of her, just to be able to overcome what was going on. She kind of altered her beam routine, but I was just happy for her."

August 6, 2021: A Joyful Reunion

The following week, Biles was back in the arms of her beloved, heading straight to the Houston Texans training camp for a sweet reunion. "Open practices a.k.a. bring your girlfriend to work day," she joked on Instagram.

August 27 2021: Adorable Anniversary

Biles and Owens celebrated a belated one-year anniversary on social media, which the former marked with several photos of the two in matching ripped denim. "Oops I forgot to tell y’all that we’ve been dating for more than a year," the gymnast wrote in August 2021. She followed it up with a cheeky pun, adding, "So happy past one year to the best thing that’s ever happened to you: ME."

December 29, 2021: Out and About

While the twosome has yet to walk a red carpet, they did enjoy a public outing to a Houston Rockets basketball game right after the holidays, where they happily posed for a picture.

February 22, 2022: Planning Ahead

First comes marriage, then comes ... babies?  According to Biles, the answer may be yes, though the number has yet to be determined. "So I want two kids, he always says he wants a football team, but he usually says three," she shared with fans in an Instagram Q&A as Owens motioned for three in the background. "We’ll see," the gymnast concluded.

Feb 14, 2022: Putting a Ring on It

On Valentine’s Day 2022, Owens popped the question to his lady love. In a video posted to his Instagram, he can be heard saying, "Well, babe, now I got you here. I want to tell you I appreciate you, so much, you know I love you. Will you marry me?" Biles, for her part, was overcome with joy, immediately responding, "Yes, yes!" before sheepishly asking, "Did you ask my dad?"

Owens later confirmed to Today that he not only asked Mr. Biles for his blessing, despite being "a little nervous at first," but also the proposal had been in the works for roughly two-and-a-half months. "I kind of started talking to the jeweler in December," he revealed.

And as for the ring? "It’s definitely my most prized possession. It definitely beats a gold medal," Biles told Today.

March 5, 2022: Yes to the Dress

Biles wasted no time putting her wedding plans into action. In fact, by March 5, she had already found the wedding dresses—yes, plural!—of her dreams. "Said yes to the dress(es)," she captioned several shots of herself holding up a sign at Galia Lahav.

The bridal shop also shared several photos of the Courage to Soar: A Body in Motion, A Life in Balance author in their wares, noting that fans weren’t seeing the real Simone Biles wedding dress, but a few sneak peeks from her fitting.

March 14, 2022: Soaking Up the Sun

For Biles’ 25^th birthday, Owens whisked her off to Turks and Caicos, where they appeared to enjoy plenty of walks—and kisses—along its sandy beaches. "Looking forward to making endless memories with you on this journey of life together, everything happens for a reason and it’s obvious we were made for each other," Owens gushed. "Here’s to your best birthday yet, and we just getting started!!!"
