Sure, a diamond is forever—unless you lose it or it gets stolen. As much as you want to show off your beautiful engagement ring and/or wedding band, you’re probably also understandably hesitant to wear them, well, everywhere. That’s exactly where silicone wedding rings come in—this genius invention takes the place of your pricey rings to give you peace of mind no matter what you’re doing.
“Silicone wedding bands provide a safe, comfortable, and affordable alternative to typical engagement and wedding ring bands,” explains jeweler Carol Offman. Many people choose to purchase a silicone wedding ring to wear when they’re traveling, going to the gym, or doing something outdoors, like hiking or spending a day at the beach. Some people even feel more comfortable wearing them to work, especially if they work in a field like construction.

Carol Offman is a private jeweler based in New York City and the founder of Inner Expressions. She has been designing and manufacturing colored gemstone and diamond jewelry for over 25 years.
The Pros and Cons of Silicone Rings
Silicone wedding bands are a fraction of the price of a diamond ring (they’re usually under $50) and they’re easy to find. Not only do they help prevent theft, but they also help keep your rings in better condition: When you’re wearing a silicone ring, you’re not wearing your “real” ring as often, meaning you’re preventing scratching and general wear and tear. They’re also comfortable to wear and come in a wide variety of colors and sizes.
Of course, silicone isn’t as resilient as a metal. “Silicone will not last a lifetime when worn every day, because silicone breaks down over time,” Offman says. “A ring made of gold or platinum will last forever if made well.” Still, it’s nice to have the option of wearing something much less expensive.
You can have fun picking one out that matches your personality, and you can opt for a shade that is supposed to mimic platinum, yellow gold, or silver, or you can do something brighter and more fun.
How to Care for Silicone Rings
Another advantage of silicone rings is that they’re really easy to take care of. Offman recommends cleaning them with a simple soap and water combo but says not to put them back on until they’re completely dry. “They should not be worn in the shower,” she adds. “If worn wet, bacteria can grow where there is no airflow between the ring and the skin.”
