After retiring from competitive snowboarding eight months ago, Shaun White is officially ready to take his two-year-long relationship with girlfriend Nina Dobrev to the next level. Now that his days of competing in the Olympics are behind him, White says he's had more time to enjoy life with the Vampire Diaries alum. So, is an engagement in their future?
After receiving a lifetime achievement award at the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Gala on October 27, 2022, the former Olympian opened up to E! News about his future plans with the actress, including whether or not he plans to pop the question anytime soon. “Time will tell,” he joked. “Things are great with Nina and I, and I am so excited to focus on our relationship and my relationship with other friends and family.”
White, who spent nearly 20 years as an Olympic athlete, says he feels like he has “so much to achieve in my life,” so he’s focusing on “checking off that list.” On that list, he says, are a variety of different goals he wants to accomplish with Dobrev at his side. Next up on their agenda? Travel the world together. “After the Olympics, I told her, ‘Let’s go for it,’” he recalled. “‘Just lay it out there. I just want to go. I want to travel.’
Recently, the duo visited the Canadian actress’s mother in France, which the athlete says was one of their most memorable adventures. “It was just the best,” White reflected. “These are those moments. You can have the glitz and glam of it all, but real family quality time with people is what I want the most, and now, I am doing that.” Since White's retirement, they’ve also vacationed in Costa Rica, the Maldives, and Switzerland.
Earlier in 2022, when White made the decision to leave competitive snowboarding behind, Dobrev fully supported her boyfriend. “The end of one chapter means the beginning of an exciting new one with endless possibilities,” she wrote on Instagram in February of 2022. “You will forever be the G.O.A.T. of snowboarding. Not to mention you are also the G.(B).O.A.T. = Greatest Boyfriend Of All Time. 😉"
Throughout the couple’s relationship, Dobrev has been White’s number one fan. “Nina’s just been so supportive and so amazing through this whole process for me,” the athlete told People in January of 2022. “Through the pandemic, she was a lifesaver. She really made that time in my life special.”
The couple first hit it off while presenting at a Tony Robbins event in 2019. A year later, the two were spotted several times in public together, which sparked dating rumors, and in April of 2020, they finally confirmed their relationship status. In May of 2020, the couple moved in together. They’ve spent the past two years documenting couple getaways and sharing their love for one another on social media.
