From romantic dinner dates to luxurious massages, Valentine’s Day is a special holiday for couples to spend quality time together and take a moment to affirm their love and connection. The holiday of love isn't just associated with boxes of chocolate and bouquets of flowers, though: February 14 is also one of the most popular days to pop the question. This Valentine’s Day, New York City restaurant Serendipity3 is elevating the typical proposal by offering a dessert dripping in diamonds and chocolate—the cornerstone of the holiday of love. Available for one day only on February 14, 2023, the Upper East Side restaurant is partnering with fine jewelry designer Lorraine Schwartz and Kellie DeFries of Crystal Ninja to serve the first-ever “Diamond Frrrozen Hot Chocolate,” which costs a grand total of $250,000.
According to a press release, the decadent drink is served in a lucite goblet adorned with Austrian crystals, which DeFries made. On top of the chocolate dessert is a mound of whipped cream, edible diamond glitter, and 23k gold gilded chocolate shavings. To sip the drink, customers use a gold straw. The concoction is also accompanied by a gilded chocolate sphere filled with edible diamonds and the star of the show: a diamond ring. The sparkler is an 18k diamond bypass ring by Lorraine Schwartz, which features a 0.69-carat heart-shaped diamond and a 0.77-carat light blue pear-shaped diamond. Both gemstones are placed on a 1.15-carat white diamond pavé band.
Creative Director Chef Joe Calderone says in a press release that the iconic New York City restaurant is excited to collaborate with two professionals in the jewelry space. “As big lovers of Lorraine Schwartz, we were thrilled to get to work with her on this special Valentine’s Day ‘Diamond Frrrozen Hot Chocolate’ featuring some of her gorgeous pieces,” Calderone shares. “The dessert is over-the-top in all the right ways, and we know Serendipity3 customers are absolutely going to love it.”
Serendipity3’s “Frrrozen Hot Chocolate” has been a famous menu item ever since the East 60th Street landmark opened in 1954. The icy blended drink uses a mix of 14 exotic cocoas and is served in a goblet with whipped cream and chocolate shavings. Since its inception, the institution has earned nine Guinness World Records—including most expensive dessert for “The Frrrozen Haute Chocolate,” which cost $25,000. In November of 2022, Serendipity3 was getting ready to serve its 30 millionth “Frrrozen Hot Chocolate.”
Many celebrities have flocked to the eatery to sip on the beloved beverage, including Marilyn Monroe, Andy Warhol, Grace Kelly, Cary Grant, Kim Kardashian, Justin Bieber, Blake Lively, and Ryan Reynolds. Selena Gomez is even an investor in the brand. “I remember Selena as a kid,” Calderone shared with New York Post. “Her parents would bring her for ice cream sundaes.” Comedian Joan Rivers is one star who loved the frozen dessert so much that she wouldn’t clear her plate until she polished off the entire treat. “A waiter once tried to take away her plate, and she said, ‘Wait, I’m not finished,’” Calderone told the outlet. “And the bowl was empty, but the bowl underneath the saucer had some—what we call dregs—in it, and she took the straw and sipped the dregs out of the bottom of the saucer.”
