If you’ve seen Netflix's new Selena: The Series starring Christian Serratos or the 1997 movie Selena, which shot J.Lo to fame, then you know who Christopher Pérez is. Here's the short version: He's Selena’s guitarist whom she fell in love with on tour. But obviously, there's so much more to his story.

He and Selena famously eloped in 1992 because, as depicted in the show and the film, Selena’s father Abraham Quintanilla was not accepting of their relationship at first considering he had a strict "no-dating" policy among his band members.

Over the years Pérez has continued to honor Selena and keep her memory alive, despite having some unresolved tension with the Quintanilla family. While the show gives us a glimpse into their relationship, here are some things you might not have known about the musician.

He Wasn’t Involved in the Creation of the Netflix Series

The show was executively produced by Abraham and Suzette Quintanilla, Selena’s father/manager and sister/drummer who seem to have not consulted Pérez on the series. He took to Instagram in April posting an image of Jesse Posey who portrays him in the show.

“Here is a pic I just saw of the actor playing me in the Netflix series,” Pérez wrote. “For the record, never met him, haven't seen the script, and I have NO idea what is going on.....but, I'd love to find out. 🧐🧐”

He Remarried and Has Two Kids

Pérez wed Vanessa Villanueva in 2001, and the couple had two children Noah and Cassie. They later split in 2008, but based on his Instagram, it appears Pérez is highly involved with the kids. And his daughter is even musically inclined!

He Has His Own Hot Sauce

As a longtime lover of all things spicy, in November 2019, the Grammy winner launched his company Pérez Pepper Sauce with business partner John Gomez, which offers an award-winning “original” flavor and a green “Jalapeño” flavor. The sauce is available online and in nearly 200 H-E-B grocery stores in Texas.

In 2013, Pérez published a tribute to his late-wife titled To Selena, With Love, in a touching depiction of her life and their relationship. Unfortunately, a 2016 lawsuit from the Quintanilla family prevented a TV production of the book. He often posts memories and old photos with the Latin superstar during their time in the band, and he helped accept Selena’s Hollywood Star with her family.
