Netflix's Latest Show Say I Do Is the Queer Eye of Weddings

Having just lived through a moment defined by canceled weddings and postponed plans, we could all use a little hope in the wedding world right now. Luckily, Netflix is already on it. Enter your newest binge: Say I Do. It's dubbed the Queer Eye of weddings and you'll quickly become obsessed for more reasons than one.

An eight-episode series debuting on July 1, Say I Do puts the powerful love stories of eight unique couples on display as interior designer Jeremiah Brent, fashion designer Thai Nguyen and chef Gabriele Bertaccini team up to give them the wedding of their dreams. But there's a catch: Each wedding is a surprise to the bride or groom and planned in less than a week! And after watching a few episodes ourselves already, it's safe to say this show is worth the hype (and the binge-watch!).

"This is the first wedding show about love," Brent tells Brides. "It is about the journey of love, the exploration of what it means to find somebody, in some instances to lose somebody, [and] to reconnect with them. It really is about the power of love and I think how it tethers every type of person and every type of scenario."

Each couple featured on the show has faced incredible obstacles in their lives and for one reason or another, were never able to make their dream weddings a reality. That's where Brent, Nguyen and Bertaccini—the masterminds behind each wedding—come in. The expert trio assists each groom in planning a surprise marriage proposal followed by an unforgettable wedding in just seven days' time. "We haven’t really seen love told through a man’s perspective or through the groom’s perspective a lot," says Brent. "I love hearing and watching these men celebrate these women the way they deserve to be celebrated."

Say I Do might even give brides-to-be some fashion inspiration of their own. Each gown on the show is a custom creation designed by Nguyen himself and no look is alike. "To me, a wedding gown is not just a gown," explains Nguyen. "It's a symbol of everlasting love. It's a symbol of how [the couple] got together, how they grew together, how they were in pain together, and to me, that gown is a celebration of their love story."

While we don't want to spoil anything for you, we will say this: These handsewn gowns are unbelievably unique (and in one case, may even convince you to wear black down the aisle!). Plus, on Say I Do, Nguyen gets most of his design inspiration from the groom since he doesn't meet the bride until after the proposal. "It's a different perspective but it's surprisingly amazing!"

And even though it's a show that highlights very specific love stories and situations, each episode is a unifying experience—fitting given today's reality. "Before meeting these couples I had a very specific idea of what love looked like," reveals Bertaccini. "Each couple is so different and it opens your mind to this whole different way of love and to be loved. Love and marriage come in many different forms and in different times of life when you least expect it. They’ll remember the wedding and I'll remember us doing the wedding and giving them the wedding because it was so rewarding."

No relationship on Say I Do is the same either. "There are so many different journeys. We tackle everything from mental illness, to what it means to be gay, what it means to get married and have that opportunity to have a family," shares Brent.
