January 2010: First Meeting
Reese and Jim met at a party shortly after Reese’s breakup with ex-boyfriend Jake Gyllenhaal. In an interview with Elle, Reese explained that “it happened out of the blue,” saying a drunk man was hitting on her and “making such an idiot of himself.” She went on to say, “Jim came over and said, ‘Please excuse my friend. He’s just broken up with someone.’ Jim is a really good friend, pulling him out of that situation. That’s just kind of who he is, a really good person.”
March 2010: Meeting the Friends
After quietly dating for a few months, Reese introduced Jim to her friends in March, according to People. Their big meeting happened when she celebrated her birthday in Ojai, California, and that was when they went public with their relationship. Not long afterward, he met her kids, Ava and Deacon, at church services during Easter weekend.
December 2020: The Engagement
A little less than a year after their first meeting, the two got engaged. The couple kept the details of their engagement pretty quiet. Later, in an interview with Elle, Reese talked about how she never thought she would get married again before meeting Jim. She said, “Jim said, ‘I’m gonna show you every day what a good partner is, what a good person is. I’m going to take care of you. I’m gonna do this so much that you’re gonna get used to it.’ I was like, ‘What are you talking about?’ I’ve never had anybody like that in my life.”
March 26, 2011: Private Wedding
According to People, the couple tied the knot in an intimate wedding ceremony at her 1920s ranch estate in Ojai, California. Reese wore a custom-designed Monique Lhuillier blush-hued gown and changed into a second Lhuillier design (a white silk mini dress) for the reception. Her daughter, Ava, was her maid-of-honor and also wore a custom Lhuillier dress.
September 2011: Merging Families

After getting married, Jim became the step-father to Ava and Deacon, Reese’s two kids from her first marriage. In an interview with Marie Claire, Reese talked about how great Jim was with the kids, saying, “I got lucky. I did. I got very lucky. He’s so wonderful with the children. I’m very blessed.”
September 27, 2012: Tennessee James Is Born
Reese and Jim welcomed their first child together, a boy named Tennessee James. In a later interview with People, Reese once again raved about Jim as a father, saying, “He’s an incredible man, a wonderful organizer, a great leader. He knows how to get people together. He’s very patient and funny with the kids. And he really encourages them to see the humor in life.”
April 19, 2013: DUI Arrest
In the spring of 2013, Reese and Jim garnered some attention when they were both arrested. According to Variety, the couple was pulled over by a police officer because their car was weaving into the lane of opposing traffic in Atlanta, Georgia. After getting agitated with the reporter, Reese was placed in handcuffs. In a later statement to Us Weekly, Reese admitted that she had “one drink too many” and apologized for her behavior.
February 2018: A Supportive Husband

Reese has credited Jim’s supportive nature as one of the reasons she branched out from just acting and began to take on more in her career (she has her own production company called Hello Sunshine). In an interview with Marie Claire, Reese said, "I get a lot of support from my husband, who cares deeply about equality and always tells me, 'Why wouldn't you call the person in charge of a company and have a personal relationship with them?' He’s encouraged me to be outspoken.”
In a 2016 interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Reese also credited Jim with some of her success, saying, “He said, ‘You should produce movies. You read more books than anybody I know. You should just buy some of them and turn them into films.’”
March 2020: A New Home
During quarantine, Reese and Jim purchased a sprawling estate in Los Angeles. According to Architectural Digest, they paid $15.9 million for the English country-style home.
June 21, 2020: Celebrating Father's Day

Reese made sure to call out Jim for being a great dad on Father's Day. She posted a photo of Jim with their son Tennessee on Instagram, with the caption, "Happy Father’s Day to this wonderful dad and to all the Fathers who are raising incredible, thoughtful, compassionate kids! I am celebrating you ALL."
July 27, 2020: Jim's 50th Birthday
For her husband's 50th birthday, Reese shared more personal family photos than she usually does on Instagram, including photos of her and Jim with all three kids. In the caption, she wrote, "Happy Birthday to my amazing hubby, Jim!! 💫 Everything you do, you put in 1000%! Whether he’s training for a triathlon, giving back to his community, supporting his friends, or loving his family, he gives his whole heart to so many people everyday! March 26, 2021: 10-Year Anniversary
On March 26, 2021, Reese and Jim celebrated 10 years of marriage. Reese acknowledged the date with a sweet throwback wedding photo on Instagram, and a caption that read, “Looking back, I can’t believe it has gone so quickly! I guess that’s how it goes with 3 kids, big LOVE, lots of laughing, non-stop travel, so many dogs, and fun adventures…figuring out this crazy world together. Here’s to many more days in the sun!”
