Rami Malek and Lucy Boynton are yet another couple that met and fell in love while on set. The two met while filming Bohemian Rhapsody, a movie that catapulted them both into fame, and have been quietly dating since at least 2018. Since then, they have managed to keep almost every single detail of their relationship private. The stars do not have social media pages and they very rarely speak about each other in interviews. Still, their relationship remains a closely watched one, and fans love to get a glimpse of the couple whenever they walk a red carpet together or appear hand-in-hand for a low-key date night.
We don't know much about what goes on behind the scenes between the couple, but here's a look at what we have found out about Rami Malek and Lucy Boynton's relationship since the beginning.
- The two met in 2017 when they started filming Bohemian Rhapsody and began dating shortly after.
- Their relationship was officially confirmed in early 2019 when Rami thanked Lucy in his acceptance speech at an awards show.
- Lucy opened up about the spotlight put on the two of them in a 2022 interview.
2017: First Meeting
Rami and Lucy met on the set of the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, in which Rami starred as Freddie Mercury and Lucy played Mercury's girlfriend, Mary Austin. The two first got together at Abbey Road Studios right before shooting began. In a 2019 interview with The Cut, Lucy talked about how she was dealing with her anxiety about filming by reading Anna Karenina in a corner when Rami approached her. "Rami felt so much the leader of that set," she recalled while saying she immediately realized he would be a friend to her. "The cast became so close going through that, as you always do when going through a particularly stressful experience, to put it politely."
January 2018: First Public Appearance
The two made their first public appearance together not long after filming wrapped. They were photographed together at a party thrown by Alexa Chung for her clothing collection at Moth Club in Hackney, London. Although they didn't make any comments about their relationship, rumors began flying that the two were dating.
February 2018: Super Bowl Appearance
A few weeks after being photographed together in London for the first time, Rami and Lucy stepped out in public again. They were spotted at the 2018 DirecTV Now Super Saturday Night Concert in Minneapolis. They even posed for a few photos together on the red carpet.
April 2018: Dating Confirmation
Rami and Lucy continued to go to events and red carpets together, but neither commented on their relationship status. It wasn't until April of 2018 that a source finally seemed to confirm that they were dating. A source close to the couple told Us Weekly, "They met while filming Bohemian Rhapsody in London. He is so into her. He goes and visits her in London all the time."
January 2019: First Time Talking About Each Other
Fans finally got official confirmation on the status of the two at the 2019 Palm Springs International Film Festival. While accepting the Breakthrough Performance Award for his role in Bohemian Rhapsody, Rami publicly spoke about Lucy for the first time, saying, "Thank you, Lucy Boynton. You have been my ally, my confidant, my love. Thank you so much."
The two would go on to spend the entire award show season together. They put on some PDA at the 2019 Golden Globes, where they celebrated Rami's win for Best Actor in a Motion Picture—Drama by hugging and kissing at an after-party. They wore matching blue and green outfits to the 2019 Critics' Choice Awards and, alongside their other Bohemian Rhapsody co-stars, presented the Best Supporting Actress award. They were also seen together at the 2019 SAG Awards, where Rami gave Lucy a kiss before going on stage to accept his award.
February 2019: More Public Gratitude
Rami and Lucy walked the red carpet together at the 2019 Academy Awards, posing for some photos and showing a little PDA. Rami won Best Actor for his role in Bohemian Rhapsody, and he made sure to give Lucy a kiss before walking on stage. During his speech, he said, "Lucy Boynton, you're the heart of this film. You are beyond immensely talented. You have captured my heart. Thank you so much."
August 2019: Lucy Talks Privacy
During a 2019 interview with The Cut, Lucy briefly touched on her relationship with Rami, explaining that one reason they keep things so secret is because they've had to deal with people trying to invade their privacy. "I had an interview recently where I was asked such crude and candid questions about my relationship," she said. "It kind of forced me to pull way back."
She also talked about the moment Rami won his Best Actor award at the Oscars when he kissed Lucy and mentioned her during his speech. She noted that, at the time, she felt "weirdly calm" and joked, "I blacked out." She added, "Him winning for his performance was like the tip of the iceberg of everything he had done. You kind of forget that there are hundreds of other people in the room."
September 2019: Admiring Each Other
In a 2019 interview with Porter magazine, Lucy once again opened up about Rami—just a little bit. When asked about the drama on the set of Bohemian Rhapsody, she talked about how she had admired Rami's professionalism. "Because of the slight rockiness that we had during filming, we had to be more involved in the process, in its entirety," she said. "Watching Rami do that—he always knows what lens we’re shooting on, which set, what the set-ups are, what the shot list is. He sees the full tapestry.”
She went on to say, "I'd never really seen that in a lead actor before, being involved in every corner. I’ve tried to do that, being more aware." She also said that she learned to take things slow with her career from Rami. "[He’s] been doing it longer," she said. "And I think the main thing is to take your time. I want to do this for the rest of my life, and it’s easy to think that you have to keep the momentum going, a phrase you hear a lot."
September 2021: Date Night
In late September of 2021, Rami and Lucy had a very special date night: they walked hand-in-hand into a London after-party for the No Time to Die premiere. According to People, Rami and Lucy wore matching black outfits and also left the party together.
March 2022: Lucy Interview
It's not often that Lucy and Rami talk about each other publicly, but during a 2022 interview with You magazine, Lucy discussed their relationship just a little bit. Although the interviewer noted that Lucy had been mostly unwilling to answer any questions about Rami, she did once again talk about what it was like when their relationship became so public with that 2019 Oscars kiss. "It sounds so silly but I was really unaware of the public element of that," she admitted. "You’re just absorbing, millisecond by millisecond, what is happening, and then suddenly you hear the applause and you realize it’s been a public moment, which is slightly strange."
