From fully decorated Christmas trees to gift exchanges on Christmas Eve, the royal family knows how to celebrate the holidays. One of our all-time favorite traditions is the annual Christmas card reveal. Every year, the group sends holiday cards to their friends and family, and the public also gets a glimpse inside the festive portraits. For their 2022 Christmas card, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle decided to commemorate the most wonderful time of the year a little bit differently: with a snapshot of just the couple.

On December 16, 2022, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex revealed their photo of choice: a black-and-white snap of the duo holding hands and smiling while attending the Robert F. Kennedy Ripple of Hope Award Gala, which took place on December 6, 2022 in New York. In the image, Meghan is wearing a white off-the-shoulder Louis Vuitton midi dress, complete with a structured tulip skirt. She has her hair tied back in an elegant updo, showing off a pair of diamond drop earrings. Harry is suited up in a black ensemble, looking dapper by Meghan’s side.

The recent picture is placed on a maroon-colored card, which is decorated with white polka dots. “Wishing you a joyful holiday season,” the card reads, according to People. “From our family to yours, and on behalf of our teams at The Archewell Foundation, Archewell Audio, and Archewell Productions, we wish you health, peace, and a very happy new year!” The royal pair signed the card with their hand-written signatures along with the sign-off message, “Best wishes, Prince Harry & Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex.”

What’s different about this year’s card is that Meghan and Harry are solo. In 2021, their Christmas card featured their two children, Archie and Lilibet. In last year’s snap, Harry is holding Archie while Meghan is picking Lilibet up in the air. According to People, the couple used their 2021 holiday card to show the first public photo of Lilibet, who was born in June of 2021. “This year, 2021, we welcome our daughter, Lilibet, to the world,” the couple wrote on their card. “Archie made us a ‘Mama’ and a ‘Papa,’ and Lili made us a family. As we look forward to 2022, we have made donations on your behalf to several organizations that honor and protect families—from those being relocated from Afghanistan to American families in need of paid parental leave.” Harry and Meghan’s engagement photo and wedding photographer, Alexi Lubomirski, shot the photo at the family's home in Santa Barbara, California.

In 2020, Meghan and Harry’s card featured an illustration of a photo that Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, shot of Archie and their two dogs, Pula and Guy. The year before that, the duke and duchess shared their first Christmas card as a family of three, which was a photo of the group on Vancouver Island in Canada.

Harry and Meghan’s 2022 holiday card reveal comes just a few days after Prince William and Kate Middleton debuted their annual family Christmas card. On December 13, 2022, the prince and princess of Wales shared a portrait of the couple and their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, holding hands and smiling while taking a stroll in Norfolk, England over the summer. Award-winning royal family photographer Matt Porteous captured the shot, which was a change from the photos they usually use in previous seasons. The couple kept it casual in jeans, while their children were all clad in sneakers. “Sharing a new picture of the family for this year’s Christmas card! 🎄,” they wrote on Instagram.
