Luxury jewelry designer and diamond expert Stephanie Gottlieb has created her share of unusual diamond shapes, ranging from dogs to horses, for her clients. So when popcorn brand Angie’s Boomchickapop asked her to create a popcorn-shaped diamond ring, she eagerly ran with it.

The idea was to create a ring that was perfect for popping the question.

Since the launch of her jewelry brand in 2013, the designer has become widely known for her unique diamond creations, in addition to her personalized bracelet stacks, rainbow-colored jewelry, and wedding and engagement rings. “The idea was to create a ring that was perfect for popping the question, so designing this popcorn-cut diamond ring fit hand-in-hand with our love of creating beautiful designs for that special day,” Gottlieb tells Brides.

You may be asking: How do you actually create a popcorn-shaped diamond? According to the designer, she started the process with a stunning 11-carat yellow diamond. “We set out to find a rough stone in the light, buttery yellow color to closely emulate what most people envision when they think of popcorn,” she shares. Gottlieb then worked with diamond cutters in Israel to facet and fish the diamond to its final iteration, a 3.66-carat popcorn-shaped sparkler.

She set the diamond in a simple yellow gold “bathtub bezel”—a thicker bezel style that encompasses an entire diamond—which in turn, intensifies the yellow hue of the stone. “We chose to set the stone in a simple bezel to highlight the curves and shape of the diamond, cut to mimic the kernel of a popped piece of popcorn,” explains Gottlieb. “It is set on a plain rounded gold band, so the focus really is on the center stone.”
