MLB star Greg Deichmann traded the baseball field for the beach on January 6, 2023. Instead of catching fly balls and pitching across long distances, the outfielder for the Oakland As married Burckel Gervais at the Grand Velas Resort in Cabo San Lucas. The athlete and his new wife planned a timeless and whimsical fairy-tale wedding for 100 of their friends and family members. "The relationship my husband and I have is truly like a fairy tale, as cheesy as that may sound," Gervais tells People. "We wanted our wedding day to reflect the kind of relationship we have and that would bring the intimacy we wanted with our guests."
The celebration began with a romantic ceremony by the ocean. Gervais walked down the aisle in a sparkly mermaid style wedding dress with a plunging neckline by Galia Lahav; “I Get to Love You” by Ruelle, which saxophonist Hiram Jafet played, served as the soundtrack for her entrance. "I even kept it a secret from my husband, so he didn't know what song I was walking down to until he walked with his parents at the start of the ceremony,” Gervais admits. The bride met her groom, who wore a white tuxedo jacket and black dress pants, at the altar, which was decorated with all-white flowers. "My favorite part of the ceremony was the moment I saw my groom before I even started walking down the aisle," Gervais reflects. "We did not have a first look, so seeing him for the first time was a feeling I will never forget." During the ceremony, their officiant asked the couple to ground themselves in the moment by hearing the waves, smelling the air, and feeling the wind. “It felt like the craziness of the wedding day slowed down in an instant and gave us a moment of appreciation," Gervais reminisces.
After the duo was pronounced husband and wife, they celebrated in a tent decorated with twinkle lights and sheer drapes. Their reception had no shortage of food. For dinner, the pair served a buffet-style meal, so everyone could spend as much time on the dance floor as possible. "Everything flowed perfectly," the bride says. Then, friends and family savored a slice of cake from Cabo Cakery, which was complete with a cake topper of the bride, groom, and their dog. For their first dance, the pair swayed to “From the Ground Up” by Dan and Shay, which held a deeper meaning for the couple. “Our relationship truly started from the ground,” Gervais notes. “We started dating not even a month after we met, so it was definitely a 'from the ground up' process getting to know each other.”
Following their nuptials, the pair jetted off to Tahiti for their honeymoon. “For sure, [it] will not be a once-in-a-lifetime vacation spot,” Gervais shares. A few weeks after they said “I do,” the baseball star posted about the dreamy day on Instagram with a photo, taken by Jaimee Morse, of the newlyweds kissing during the recessional. “1.7.2023 I married my best friend,” his caption says. “The happiness and love we felt the whole weekend was something we will never forget. To everyone that joined us for our special weekend, we can only attempt to express our gratitude for making it the most joyful and amazing weekend we could only dream of. Cheers to forever 🥂-The Deichmann’s.”
Almost a year before they got married, Deichmann got down on one knee on a bed of rose petals with a mountainous backdrop. “Sooo I did a thing yesterday,” he wrote on Instagram. “3/31/2022 I get to spend the rest of my life with my best friend. I love you Burckel Mae 💍💍💍.” His new fiancée also posted about the proposal. “I love you so much Gregory Deichmann + I can’t wait to marry you!” she exclaimed. “I *pinky* promise to forever♥️.” The duo met in 2017 and have been going strong for six years.
