Whether or not you believe much in the power of the moon, stars and sun in the cosmos, it’s hard to ignore the beauty of that milky white celestial beauty—in all its stages. Last year, on July 20, 2019 marked the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, so it only feels appropriate to show a little respect to that landmark with an experience playing off or honoring Earth’s glowing satellite. Looking for a honeymoon that reaches for more than the stars? Read on for a few lunar honeymoon ideas guaranteed to make your honeymoon even more out of this world.

The Watergate Hotel
in Washington D.C. fully embraced the Apollo 11 milestone, launching a new “room”, especially for the occasion laset July. In this glamping globe on the rooftop, 15 stories high, you’ll overnight under the moonlight in a velvet bed under a crystal sputnik chandelier—it’s outfitted with a telescope, too, naturally. For $5,000 a night you also get the top-floor suite for the night, a VIP table at Top of the Gate with a round of astronauts’ favorite Tang cocktails and a housemade moon pie, moonlit yoga, a lunar turndown with Moon Juice Dream Dust nightcap tea, and tickets to The National Gallery of Art’s exhibit “By the Light of the Silvery Moon: A Century of Lunar Photography, 1850s to Apollo.”

Astronaut wannabes—especially anyone who attended Space Camp as a kid—and moon lovers can really go for it with this splurge of a lifetime. For the half-century anniversary, The Post Oak Hotel at Uptown Houston and the Johnson Space Center have created an exclusive $10,000 package that gives you both the chance to be part of an actual space mission, plus stay for two very VIP nights at the luxury hotel (highlights include an expansive wine collection, stunning modern art collection, spa and on-site Rolls-Royce showroom), take a private helicopter flight to Ellington Field, tour the Space Center’s artifacts, and have a private lunch with an astronaut.

Although that up-close-and-personal experience may be hard to beat, there are still other ways to harness some of the moon’s energy and healing—think full moon yoga on the beach at Madinat Jumeirah in Dubai, a session that harnesses its special energies with special asanas tailored to the Svadhisthana chakra (the most open at this time), or a shaman-led ceremony tailored to the phase of the moon on the Baja Peninsula at Montage Los Cabos. Bend, Oregon’s Pronghorn Resort allows you to truly connect with nature by attending a crystal sound meditation on a new moon in their teepee, where you’ll gaze out at the high desert surroundings. DIY Sage Workshops are held on full moons to promote positive energy in your new home. Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal, in Los Cabos, offers moon meditation sessions, and has a spa, Waldorf Astoria Spa, inspired by the lunar cycle. (Let them recommend the best couple treatments for the particular phase, after you drink a Moon potion mixed with ingredients that address it being full, new, waxing or waning.)

The delectable moon cycle treatments at St. Lucia’s Marigot Bay resort are dreamy on their own, but paired with a Couples’ Cocoon—in which you’re wrapped up together in a scrub or wrap—it’s out of this world. In Turks and Caicos, at The Palms, you can set a time after dark to go moon bathing, which also includes customized aromatherapy massages and mini treatments, after-dinner cocktails and snacks on lounge chairs in the sand, lit by the bright sky. And even if you don’t make it to the Space Station, the Marriott Marquis Houston is feting the landing with a Moon Melt Massage—using warm salt stones, shot river stones and a foot scrub.

L’Auberge de Sedona
’s Mindful Moon Meditation Series is a guided journey of healing sessions that take place on each night of the full moon, in the presence of Sedona’s famous energy vortexes. Those are also part of Enchantment Resort’s Table Top Mountain Vortex Experiences, which happen each new and full moon, and mix hiking with new meditative experiences. The legal start to your life together is a great time to manifest your deepest desires, which is just what you'll do during a new moon at Mii Amo, also in Sedona. The Spirit of the New Moon treatment starts with writing intentions and continues with a foot bath and full body massage. Similarly, the immersive Kaulana Ke Kino experience at Grand Wailea, A Waldorf Astoria Resort, taps into ancient wisdom of the Hawaiian moon calendar to inform a ritual of native protocols and ceremonies during specific moon phases.

Moonlight makes a destination dinner for two far more romantic, of course. The Full Moon Dinners at Thompson Playa del Carmen, Mexico, are monthly occasions you’d be lucky to time your honeymoon with. The special three-course meal—think ceviche, shrimp-stuffed jalapeño chiles and grilled tomahawk steak—takes place on the sand, under that bright white orb, and is accompanied by live music and cocktails. La La Lune, a seven-course feast, happens on The Mulia Bali’s ocean pier each full moon, a major event on the island where the Hindu locals follow a lunar calendar. They believe the moon god blesses people with light on these occasions that symbolize perfection and infinity—perfect to celebrate a new union. Bermuda’s Fairmont Southampton’s Ocean Club restaurant does Full Moon Fizz cocktail and gourmet food station parties overlooking a private beach inspired by ancient monikers such as Strawberry Moon, Thunder Moon and Sturgeon Moon.

In certain destinations it just seems the moon is bigger and more magical. The private Guatemalan jungle reserve around Las Lagunas Boutique Hotel in Flores is such a place. There, you can take a private boat ride on the Quexil Lagoon to watch the Mayan moon rise, complimented by a bottle of wine paired with cheeses and meets, and even personalized further with an on-board bartender and bites, if you wish. And for a cool sight, head to Broome, Australia’s Staircase to the Moon, a beautiful optical illusion that occurs when the moon rises over the mudflats at very low tides.
