Katie Couric recently made a trip down the aisle—but she wasn't the one saying "I do." Over the July Fourth weekend, screenwriter Ellie Monahan, 29, Couric's eldest daughter with the late attorney Jay Monahan, exchanged vows with Mark Dobrosky at New York's Cedar Lakes Estate. The festivities kicked off with an '80s-themed pre-wedding dinner and ended with fireworks.
The bride wowed in a strapless lace ballgown for the mountaintop ceremony, but Couric's mother of the bride dress was equally memorable. While being escorted down the aisle by husband John Molner, whom she wed in 2014, the veteran anchor turned heads in a pink, strapless floral gown designed by Georgina Chapman. Between the ruched bodice, the high-low hem, the playful print, and the pockets—yes, it had pockets—her Marchesa gown was a clear departure from typical mother of the bride attire.
Shortly after the big day, she took to her Instagram story to send thanks to the British designer. "A huge thank you to @GeorginaChapmanMarchesa and her wonderful team for making this dress for me. I ❤️ it," she captioned a shot grinning in front of the wedding's scenic setting. "And it has pockets!!!!" She paired the gown with gold open-toed heels and wore her signature blonde hair in loose curls.
Though the bride's father wasn't there physically, there were meaningful tributes to him included throughout the day. In 2019, Dobrosky proposed with Couric's engagement ring from her late husband, who passed away from colon cancer in 1998. On the day of the nuptials, the bride accessorized her wedding gown with an elegant pearl bracelet, a gift from her father to Couric during their eight-year marriage.
In an interview hosted on her own platform, KatieCouric.com, Couric revealed that her daughter walked down the aisle solo to eschew tradition and pay homage to her dad. “First of all, nobody’s ‘giving Ellie away’—she made a choice to get married. And of course, Jay couldn’t be there,” Couric said.
The song selection ensured that he'd still be top of mind for all attendees. The processional was set to "Ashokan Farewell," played by the Jay Ungar & Molly Mason Family Band. "Jay Monahan loved that song," Couric shared in an Instagram caption, "So it was a way to honor him." The sentimental soundtrack was the perfect touch, as Couric revealed that dry eyes were scarce. "Yes, I cried the whole time. Most of the people there did," she admitted.
At the pre-wedding party, Couric's nieces repurposed the dress that her late sister Emily wore to the Today Show alum's 1989 nuptials to Monahan—a nostalgic and on-theme touch for the retro gathering.
The entire family played a part in Monahan's big day. Couric's younger daughter Carrie, who served as maid of honor, serenaded the newlyweds three times throughout the weekend. At the pre-wedding dinner, she sang "Crazy For You" by Madonna. During the ceremony, she joined the band for an acoustic cover of "Songbird" by Fleetwood Mac. For the reception, she dedicated a rendition of "Late to the Party" by Kacey Musgraves to the happy couple. The groom's brother, who served as best man, played guitar for the performance.
While Monahan and Dobrosky enjoy newlywed bliss, Couric is prepping to release her memoir "Going There" this fall, where she'll reveal some of the personal and professional struggles she endured off the air throughout her iconic 30-year career.
