Joe Alwyn Addresses Engagement Rumors With Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn have one of the most private relationships in Hollywood, despite the “Anti-Hero” singer’s massive fame and huge fanbase. Throughout their relationship, the couple has sparked engagement rumors, but they’ve managed to dodge the conversation every time. Once again, the Conversations With Friends star is asked about his relationship status with the Grammy Award-winner during an interview for WSJ Magazine’s May issue. “If I had a pound for every time I think I’ve been told I’ve been engaged, then I’d have a lot of pound coins,” Alwyn jokes. “I mean, the truth is, if the answer was yes, I wouldn’t say, and if the answer was no, I wouldn’t say.”

The actor continues to mention that due to the nature of social media, sharing private aspects of our lives has become the norm. Even though he and his girlfriend are public figures, he doesn’t feel obligated to partake. “We live in a culture that people expect so much to be given,” he says. “So that if you’re not posting all the time about what you’re doing, how you’re spending a day, or how you made a breakfast, does that make you a recluse?” He does admit that he wants to “feel slightly less guarded sometimes in interviews or in whatever kind of interactions,” which is often a response to our culture and the press. Although, he knows that if he were to share a little information, “It just opens the door,” he says.

Alwyn shared similar feelings about his need for privacy during in interview with Elle UK in April of 2022. “It's not really [because I] want to be guarded and private,” he explained. “It’s more a response to something else. We live in a culture that is so increasingly intrusive…The more you give–and frankly, even if you don't give it–something will be taken.” He echoed that statement again in 2018 during an interview for GQ. “Someone’s private life is, by definition, private," he remarked. "No one is obliged to share their personal life.”

Swift has also talked to the press about the private nature of her relationship with Alwyn. She previously told The Guardian that although she has been open about her dating life in the past, she’s never going to reveal as much information about her partnership with Alwyn. “I’ve learned that if I do, people think it’s up for discussion, and our relationship isn’t up for discussion,” she noted. “If you and I were having a glass of wine right now, we’d be talking about it, but it’s just that it goes out into the world. That’s where the boundary is, and that’s where my life has become manageable. I really want to keep it feeling manageable.”

The couple supposedly met in May of 2016 at the Met Gala. Throughout their relationship, they’ve shared some cute moments together in public, but they never get into the details. Alwyn made an appearance in Swift’s documentary, Miss Americana, and the duo wrote a few songs together for Swift’s Folklore album. Although Swift isn’t transparent about their union, she’s given hints through song lyrics.
