After nine years of wedded bliss, Jesse Tyler Ferguson is still looking fondly back on his wedding to husband Justin Mikita. The actor and the lawyer were married in 2013 in a beautiful celebration in Manhattan. Celebrity friends of the couple like Zachary Quinto, Padma Lakshmi, Eric Stonestreet, Julie Bowen, and Ty Burell were in attendance, and the playwright of the Broadway hit play Angels in America officiated the ceremony. In an exclusive interview with People, the Modern Family star and the LGBTQIA+ activist chatted about their favorite moment from that special day.
Surprisingly, it is one of the in-between moments of the festivities that truly stood out for both Ferguson and Mikita as one of their absolute favorites. "We got married on a very hot night in July in NYC," recalls Mikita to People. "We held an afterparty at a hotel a few blocks away from the wedding venue."
"It was always our plan to have people parade over to the afterparty," explains Ferguson to People. "Our wedding planner, Bryan Rafanelli, had the great idea of handing out noisemakers to guests so we could keep the vibe alive on the walk over to the new venue." Mikita adds, "It was a Saturday night in SoHo. It was already loud on the streets!"
Ferguson reveals that both of their "favorite memory from the night is from that walk." He recalls a photo that showcases Mikita and himself along the sidewalks of NYC with friends beaming behind them. "We have this photo framed above our fireplace at home," he continues. "Amongst some of our guests, us, our friend Padma Lakshmi, who already ran home to change into her dancing dress!"
Since saying "I do," Ferguson and Mikita have continued to build their relationship and grow their family. The pair had their first son, Beckett Mercer Ferguson-Mikita, together via surrogate in 2020. Then on November 15, 2022, the pair announced that they welcomed a brand new baby boy as Ferguson was on Broadway in the show Take Me Out. The actor shared the big news in an Instagram post with the caption: "Sad to be away from my @takemeoutbway fam tonight but we ran off to welcome our newest little one, Sullivan Louis Ferguson-Mikita. A special thanks to @drshahinghadir for helping us grow our family & our incredible surrogate and all of the nurses and doctors. We are overjoyed to be a family of four."
Not only has Ferguson's real family grown recently, but he also played a part in his TV niece's recent wedding celebration. When Modern Family star Sarah Hyland tied the knot to Wells Adams in August 2022, the actress asked Ferguson to officiate the ceremony for her. “I’ve known Jesse since I was 18 years old,” Hyland told Vogue. “I remember his first date with his husband, Justin. So, we’ve been through so much. Jesse, Justin, Wells, and I have traveled together, just the four of us. So, it was really special to have him up there.”
