Real talk, what teenage girl didn't believe they were the future Mrs. Justin Bieber in 2009? And, who would have thought that model Hailey Baldwin would claim that lucky title? After meeting in their early teenage years to a whirlwind engagement, the Biebers decade-long romance in the making was one nobody could have expected. Here's everything you need to know about Justin and Hailey's (aka his "one less lonely girl's") relationship.
- Hailey Baldwin met Justin Bieber in 2009 when the two were just merely (awkward) teenagers.
- As years went by, the pair grew in and out of touch as they stayed "good friends," even sharing a New Year's kiss in 2016.
- Justin proposed to Hailey in July 2018 after an intense two-year break-up.
- After a whirlwind engagement, they wed in a New York City courthouse just two months later.
- In September 2019, the Biebers hosted a second wedding in South Carolina.
2009: An Awkward Teenage Introduction—Part 1
Believe it or not, Hailey didn't even crack a smile when she met Justin Bieber for the first time. In a resurfaced (and anticlimactic) video, Hailey's dad Stephen Baldwin is seen introducing his daughter to the pop star. Who knew that in less than ten years Justin would literally make her one less lonely girl?
2011: An Awkward Teenage Introduction—Part 2
A few years after meeting Justin for the first time, Hailey ran into him again at his documentary premiere, Never Say Never. While the pair smiled together for the cameras, romance was most definitely not in the air since Justin was dating former Disney star Selena Gomez at the time.
January 3, 2016: That New Year's Kiss
After Justin's relationship with Gomez ended, rumors started to swirl around his budding relationship with Hailey. At the end of 2015, they went on vacation together and documented their flirty banter on Instagram. But it wasn't until Justin posted a photo of him kissing Hailey that romance rumors were confirmed. We know who they kissed at midnight!
February 11, 2016: Justin Predicts Their Marriage
Two years before they would actually tie the knot, Justin predicted a future marriage to Hailey in an interview with GQ. "What if Hailey ends up being the girl I’m gonna marry, right?" he shared. "If I rush into anything, if I damage her, then it’s always gonna be damaged. It’s really hard to fix wounds like that. It’s so hard...I just don’t want to hurt her.”
May 27, 2018: Their Old Flame Reignites
Somewhere between 2016 and 2018, Hailey and Justin went separate ways (and Justin infamously got back together with Gomez). But, they reignited their former flame in the middle of 2018. Hailey even acknowledged their time apart to The Times saying, "We went through a long period of time when we weren’t friends. We didn’t speak for quite some time, and there was a lot of weirdness that went on. We’ve moved past that."
July 7, 2018: A Very Special Engagement
During an intimate trip to the Bahamas, Justin proposed to Hailey in a moment she later called "very special." A few days following the milestone, Justin shared the news with a very, very, very long Instagram caption. "Was gonna wait a while to say anything but word travels fast, listen plain and simple Hailey I am soooo in love with everything about you! So committed to spending my life getting to know every single part of you loving you patiently and kindly," he wrote. He continues with a lot more kind words for his fiancée but if you want to cry about the fact that we all lost our chance to become Mrs. Bieber, just read the full post.

In September 2018, the two moved into Justin's home in Toronto together. In a Vogue article later released in 2019, the couple revealed that shortly after this period, they began couples therapy while adjusting to their new life as husband and wife. The Biebers explained that they were working on having differences without being unkind. "Fighting is good," Justin said. "Doesn't the Bible talk about righteous anger? We don't want to lose each other. We don't want to say the wrong thing, and so we've been struggling with not expressing our emotions, which has been driving me absolutely crazy because I just need to express myself, and it's been really difficult to get her to say what she feels."
October 16, 2018: A Confirmed Marriage
Despite previous claims that the couple did not get married at the courthouse, Justin confirmed the nuptials news to a fan. The newlyweds were spotted grabbing breakfast together at Joan's on Third in Studio City in Los Angeles, when a fan approached them asking for a little bit of clarification on their relationship status. "I said to them, 'I don’t want to say congratulations, but are you married?'" the source told the Daily Mail. "Justin said, 'Yes, we are married.' He said he has a lot of baggage and called Hailey 'an angel' for sticking by his side, but she just rolled her eyes."

Despite getting married two months earlier, the model randomly made the marriage Instagram official by changing her name. She updated her Instagram bio to read “Hailey Rhode Bieber," and changed her handle to @haileybieber. Hailey later opened up to Bustle on the matter, saying, "I'm very proud of my family name. I come from a great family with a history in this industry. I remember when I was going to change it, I asked my dad if he was going to be upset and he was like, 'No! I don't care. We love you. April 1, 2019: April Fools!
April Fools Day 2019 will forever go down in history for one simple reason: Justin and Hailey announced a fake pregnancy. It all started when Justin shared a picture of an ultrasound to Instagram followed by a photo of Hailey presumably at the doctor's office. April 13, 2021: Justin Gets Real About Their "Tough" First Year of Marriage
For the May 2021 cover of GQ, Justin got candid about his and Hailey's first year of marriage, sharing that they dealt with their fair share of relationship struggles. “The first year of marriage was really tough,” he told the publication, “because there was a lot, going back to the trauma stuff. There was just lack of trust. There was all these things that you don’t want to admit to the person that you’re with, because it’s scary. You don’t want to scare them off by saying, ‘I’m scared.’”
He added that he felt he was walking "on eggshells" during the first year of marriage, until he really started to believe in their relationship. But now he says, “we’re just creating these moments for us as a couple, as a family, that we’re building these memories. And it’s beautiful that we have that to look forward to. Before, I didn’t have that to look forward to in my life. My home life was unstable. Like, my home life was not existing. I didn’t have a significant other. I didn’t have someone to love. I didn’t have someone to pour into. But now I have that.”
One of Justin's oldest friends Ryan Good told the publication that Hailey was, in some ways, Justin's saving grace. “She is just a strong, consistent, stabilizing force in his life,” said Good. “And that was something he was missing all those years.”
Justin also revealed that he wants to "have babies and do that whole thing," but he and Hailey are in no rush to start a family. “Not this second, but we will eventually," he said.

He stated, "My intention for 2021 is to continue to set goals and have fun while doing them. Make sure I put my family first, and hopefully, we squish out a nugget." While Hailey had more reservations about having kids so soon, he quickly assured that he's more than willing to wait until Hailey is ready.
Weeks later in an interview with Ellen he said, "I'd love to have myself a little tribe." He added, "It's her body and whatever she wants to do. Hailey still has some things she wants to accomplish as a woman. I think she just is not ready yet, and I think that's okay."
February 1, 2022: Hailey Announces That She Isn't Ready for Kids
In an article published by the Wall Street Journal in February 2022 titled Hailey Bieber's Next Move, the model announced that she isn't quite ready for children yet. Definitely no kids this year; that would be a little bit hectic, I think."

"You want your wife to do something that you're not doing and it's like, it's hard sometimes to look in the mirror and really have to realize, man, maybe you're not the person that you necessarily thought that you were. "He's still the person that I wanna be rushing back to."
