Your pre-wedding skincare routine most likely started well in advance of your wedding date. But while on the big day your face will surely be beaming and your makeup flawless, it’s easy to forget details like your neck, arms, chest, and back. That's why implementing a body care routine, in addition to your skincare routine, is key to having glowing skin from head to toe.
As a busy bride-to-be, you don't need one more thing to focus on during the planning process. So fear not, because a body care routine will only relax you, giving you some much needed me time. The best part? It doesn't have to add extra hours or errands to your to-do list. “Prepping for your wedding is the absolutely perfect time to work a body care routine into your life," says Shannon Davenport, the founder of Esker Beauty. "Depending on the silhouette of your dress, there might be an area that you want to focus on, like your legs, shoulders, or clavicle—or it might just be about boosting an allover glow and making sure your skin is super smooth.”
You might be wondering what exactly is a body care routine, anyway? Davenport explains, “A body care routine can be about [working towards] skincare results just like a traditional beauty routine. But it's also connected to taking care of your mind and your whole self. It's about ritual—taking a minute to clear your head and focusing on the way you feel. It can be as simple as taking a warm bath with some salts, or as complex as incorporating multiple steps around hair removal, exfoliating, and moisturizing. It really depends on your needs and what feels relaxing to you and not like an extra set of tasks in your routine.”
Before you start your body care routine, keep in mind the skin that will show in your wedding photos. Try to pay special attention to the backs of your arms, which can be bumpy, and to your décolletage (also known as your neck and chest areas), says Dr. Melissa Levin, founder of Entière Dermatology and a clinical instructor at NYU Langone. “The skin on your neck contains less fat, and needs gentle attention,” she notes.
Want to start a body care routine? Try adding natural and gentle oils and washes to your body care routine to get glowing skin from head to toe. As Davenport says, “Firstly, an oil is a wonderful thing to apply on your skin for a natural glow, but make sure that you're using a dry, lightweight oil, that will sink into your skin quickly without leaving any greasy residue.” Adding in dry brushing for skin exfoliation is just as vital as exfoliating your face in a skincare routine.
