The dress you choose for your wedding is a big deal, of course, but more than anything you want people looking at your happy face. Radiant, glowing, luminous — these are words any bride would surely love to be called.

And while your energy and excitement will be obvious no matter the state of your skin, with all eyes on you it's a good idea to take extra care of your complexion in the months leading up to the big day. After all, stress, which virtually all brides have, can be traumatic to our largest organ. A little planning and dedication, however, can get you the desired results.

"It's important to prepare well in advance with a solid skincare regimen, as radiant, clear skin takes some work for most," according to Dr. David Lortscher, San Diego-based dermatologist and founder of Curology. "In general, avoid products with too many ingredients, including fragrance and preservatives that can trigger irritation or allergy, and try not to experiment with new products within the last few weeks."

In addition to sticking with specific formulas, Beverly Hills celebrity dermatologist Dr. Harold Lancer also advises making dietary changes the month before the wedding: "Cut out white carbs, processed foods and excessively salty foods or snacks." That, alongside a daily and nightly skincare regimen, "will reveal new, glowing skin by the time the day has arrived."

So that you're armed with the best out there, we asked Lortscher and Lancer, along with A-list go-to estheticians Vanessa Hernandez and Shani Darden to each recommend their favorites, broken down into normal, dry, acne/oily and sensitive skin types. One thing they all agree on: everyone can benefit from retinol. Go forth and glow!

A solid foundation is necessary for building a skincare regime that will get your skin ready for its close-up. Darden stresses that brides need to be diligent about their regimen, which starts with always removing your makeup at night! This "is a highly effective cleanser that's strong enough to wash off your makeup, but gentle enough to not cause irritation," she says. "The single most important thing you can do for your skin is to protect it from the sun," says Darden. "Control Corrective's SPF 30 provides the daily protection you need without clogging your pores." That's because its zinc base is grease-free yet still hydrating, non-comedogenic and packed with antioxidants, making it actually great for the skin. If you had to pinpoint just one specific feature on your face to get in tip-top shape, it might just be your lips. After all, they have the most important job of the day between the big kiss and all that smiling. "Magic Balm is my go-to lip product to keep my lips soft and smooth, day and night," says Darden. Regular use of the organic fruit and botanical oil-enriched product will get your pout ready for the spotlight. Magic Balm, $18, Honest Beauty

It's important to find a moisturizer you absolutely love, so that you will actually use it morning and night. Darden's recommendation is iS Clinical Reparative Moisture Emulsion, which she calls "an extremely hydrating moisturizer that won't clog your pores." Sensing a theme? Clogged pores lead to pimples and other problems, so soothing with this lightweight paraben-free, peptide-packed emulsion will keep your skin plumped and line-free. "I use the professional version of the at-home NuFACE Trinity in all of my facials," says Darden. Indeed, devices can help mimic a professional facial experience from the comfort of your bathroom, and they're safe to use much more frequently than you'd get facials. "The micro-current technology helps improve facial contour, tone skin, and reduce wrinkles." Think of it as an investment that's a win-win-win! Trinity Facial Trainer, $325, NuFACE

"Don't start using a retinol right before your wedding," warns Darden. But, if you've tried one before or start early enough (at least three months before tying the knot), it can be a game-changer. "My Retinol Reform is great to incorporate into your routine — it decreases fine lines and wrinkles, boosts collagen in the skin and helps make it look tighter and younger." Who wouldn't want that? Retinol Reform, $95, Shani Darden Skincare

No one wants bags on her big day. Darden's favorite under-eye baggage preventer is Youth Eye Complex, which "helps hydrate and smooth under-eye puffiness, dark circles and wrinkles." It does so with a formula that uses "intelligent proteins" to penetrate and treat the signs of aging at a cellular level. Hyaluronic acid is the main ingredient (not water!), ensuring a major blast of hydration alongside peptides and key growth factors that are power players. Exfoliation is an essential if you want a healthy complexion. And not just for brides! Darden says, "At-home exfoliants are key to keeping your skin bright and glowing. I recommend using Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Peels (Original Strength) once a week." The two-step treatment has powerful ingredients including glycolic and lactic acids, along with green tea extract and vitamins A, C and E to protect from environmental damage. "With normal skin you can exfoliate up until the day before your wedding." Alpha Beta Peels, $88, Dr. Dennis Gross available at Shani Darden Skincare

Even those who don't struggle with sensitivity or oiliness like to keep fine lines and aging at bay. Another at-home device that is worth the money — especially if Botox isn't your bag — is LightStim for Wrinkles. "It helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles and stimulate the production of collagen in your skin," using patented LED light therapy. Advises Darden, "Use the light on target areas for three minutes per area, five to seven days a week." You'll be tight and toned with invisible pores. LightStim for Wrinkles, $249, LightStim

At least a month before the wedding, Dr. Lancer advises beginning a hydrating retinol treatment such as Sunday Riley Luna Sleeping Night Oil. "It is a powerful retinol blended with soothing botanical oils to activate the skin's cellular turnover without creating excessive dryness." Luna Sleeping Night Oil, $105, Sunday Riley available at Sephora

Only use products you've tested before during the week before the wedding — and make smart dietary choices and drink lots of water, according to Lancer. Exfoliation is key during this crucial time. "Use a finely grained physical exfoliant during the week before your wedding — varying the use depending on how sensitive your skin is. This will help slough away the dry, dead buildup of cells on the skin's surface, allowing for better moisture penetration and keeping the skin looking bright and fresh." "The Method: Polish" sensitive skin exfoliator, $75, LANCER Skincare available at Nordstrom

Hydration is, of course, key for those with parched skin, and oils are one of the best ways to infuse it with beneficial botanicals and vitamins. "Extremely dry skin will benefit from a drop or two of oil mixed in with your typical moisturizer," says Lancer of Epicuren's Bulgarian Rose Otto Oil, which contains avocado, grape seed, apricot kernel and, naturally, rose oils for long-term moisture. "The week before a major event like a wedding you want to ensure skin is pampered and protected," says Lancer. After all, when skin is dry it tends to look wrinkled, stressed or crepey. One way to do that is with a healing serum like Lancer Skincare Lift Serum Intense, made with soothing pure gold, among other ingredients. "This serum has soothing vegan stem cells and hyaluronic acid to lock in moisture and the first signs of aging." Lift Serum Intense, $275, LANCER Skincare available at Nordstrom

Sometimes the best products are the least expensive. "The night before the wedding, ensure skin is gently but thoroughly cleansed of any makeup," says Lancer, since "even the highest-quality color cosmetics cause notable irritation in the skin if left on overnight." He advises massaging an organic oil into the skin with long, upward strokes. "Then gently wipe away the oil and makeup with a warm, wet cloth until all traces are gone." Premium Organic Olive Oil, $22, Bragg available on Amazon

On occasions when you want your skin totally clean and decongested, don't be afraid to clean it twice. "After cleansing your complexion of makeup, follow with a gentle non-foaming cleanser that won't strip the skin of moisture," recommends Lancer. His classic pick: Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser, which he says should be followed with serums while the skin is still damp to seal in the moisture, then a rich night cream (consider the repairing Lancer Skincare Intensive Night Treatment). Gentle Skin Cleanser, $11, Cetaphil available at Walmart

When the countdown is on, and you're nervously pacing around unable to sleep, "a soothing brightening mask can be a great treatment option," says Lancer. That is, "as long as you skin is used to the ingredients and you're certain it won't cause a reaction." In other words, test it out in the weeks leading up. Dr. Brandt's Flash Facial Recovery Mask is formulated with oxygen to revive dull, stressed skin and erase all signs of fatigue. Oxygen Flash Facial Recovery Mask, $70, Dr. Brandt available at Sephora

Another option for the night before is Clarins' Shaping Facial Lift Mask. The thick cream is full of Chinese barley and gingko biloba, which take care of puffiness due to fluid retention — definitely a concern when you're about to be photographed for 12 hours straight. For the most soothing results, put the jar in the refrigerator before use, so it not only brightens and illuminates the complexion, it also cools. Shaping Facial Lift Mask, $55, Clarins

Especially for those living in sunny climates, leading up to saying "I do" it's important to keep your skin protected from damaging and drying rays. "Be sure to apply an SPF 30 to protect against sun damage during photo opportunities and outdoor ceremonies." His pick is Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Defense SPF 30, "a light but hydrating sunscreen that protects against UVA and UVB rays." Ultra Sheer Defense SPF 30, $11, Neutrogena

When the big day has arrived, prepping your skin before makeup application is crucial to avoid appearing dry and flaky. "Maintaining hydration and glow without excessive oiliness is your goal today," says Lancer. "A moisturizer with peptides and antioxidants will keep skin looking fresh and help protect against environmental damage to the complexion," he says. "The Method: Nourish" moisturizer, $125, LANCER Skincare available at Nordstrom

Of course you cannot forget about the eyes — they will be smiling just as much as your lips and are prone to fine lines. If the delicate skin around them is dried out, makeup can easily settle in those lines and make them more pronounced. Dermalogica's Multivitamin Power Firm contains vitamins A, C and E to improve elasticity, accelerate skin repair and fight free radicals. Multivitamin Power Firm, $58, Dermalogica

Always end your skincare regimen with some kind of complexion finisher. Lancer's Dani Glowing Skin Perfector, he says, is "the ideal finishing touch to a perfectly cared-for complexion." The lightweight formula contains Asian botanicals that blur pores and micro-fine light-catching mineral highlighters which hide imperfections. Says Lancer, "it's brightening, perfecting and absolutely gorgeous." Dani Glowing Skin Perfector, $95, LANCER Skincare available at Neiman Marcus

The first thing all brides-to-be should do after getting engaged, according to Hernandez, is "immediately invest in a Clarisonic (or Foreo) handheld device. It's a way to get your skin extra clean, especially if it's congested." The very portable (and rechargable) spinning brush is safe to use every night, she says, and is a "great way to remove makeup, sunblock and oil and leave your pores super clean, with a smooth look." For those who are prone to acne, keeping the skin and pores clean is critical in the months leading up to the big day. Hernandez stresses that you should get into the routine of washing your face thoroughly every night using a "gentle, yet thorough face wash" like this one by Brave Soldier that contains natural botanicals to penetrate deep into the pores without irritating or over-drying the complexion. A few crinkly smile lines are one thing — you'll be grinning ear to ear all day, after all — but no one wants deep crows' feet for their wedding. L'Oréal Paris Age Perfect Eye Renewal Cream is an "amazing all-in-one," according to Hernandez, which "firms, brightens and hydrates the eye area. Use it in the morning and evening leading up to the big day to minimize dark circles." Age Perfect Eye Renewal Cream, $25, L'Oréal Paris

Clearing out the gunk is a key part of getting radiant, glowing skin sans blemishes. GlamGlow SuperMud Clearing Treatment is "a great clarifying mask that removes oil and excess bacteria and helps ensure a clear and healthy-looking face for the big day," says Hernandez. It's a wonder-working treatment that harnesses mud, charcoal and six acids to "tighten pores, exfoliate and detoxify skin." The esthetician advises using it once a week. For Acne/Oily Skin

"For someone dealing with acne, it's important to start a retinol cream at least two months before the wedding," says Hernandez. "Use it twice a week at night to really kill acne-causing bacteria, tighten the pores and make the skin look refined." Those with heavy acne should visit a derm for one that's prescription-strength. She likes to mix a pea-sized amount of the retinol with your night cream to make a diluted version "that will allow for all the benefits of the retinol cream without creating red, flaky, dry skin." Also, spread out usage in the week: Monday and Thursday or Wednesday and Saturday, she says. Retinol Renewal with RestorAtive Complex, $88, PCA Skin

For Acne/Oily Skin

Especially around the wedding date, says Hernandez, "brides tend to be more stressed and can get more broken out so it's good to prevent that using products that will keep their skin extra clean." One great go-to is Kiehl's Ultra-Facial Oil-Free Lotion. "I like that it is lightweight and goes right into the skin without feeling greasy," she says. Ultra-Facial Oil-Free Lotion, $26, Kiehl's

Don't forget to exfoliate: along with a more intensive exfoliating weekly mask, Hernandez advocates for Ayur-Medic's Antibacterial Wash with Exfoliating Beads. It's "a gentle exfoliating scrub that kills bacteria accumulated from product and environmental factors," she says, adding that it should be used in the morning two to three times per week. Antibacterial Wash with Exfoliating Beads, $27, Ayur-Medic

If you want something that does a lot in a very short time, consider StriVectin Labs 5-Minute Weekly Glycolic Peel. According to Hernandez, "it firms the skin, brightens the complexion, removes dead skin cells and softens fine lines and wrinkles" when used just once a week, at night. Consistent use means a much-improved complexion when you say, "I do." Labs 5-Minute Weekly Glycolic Peel, $62, StriVectin Labs

The thing many people don't know about dealing with acne is that you don't want to dry it out — keeping the skin hydrated is essential to eradicating blemishes. Hernandez recommends Kiehl's Hydro-Plumping Re-Texturizing Serum Concentrate, which should be used all over the face and neck after cleansing to smooth and intensively moisturize skin, without creating an oil slick. Hydro-Plumping Re-Texturizing Serum Concentrate, $58, Kiehl's

Always top a serum with a moisturizer, like the Revitalift Volume Filler Moisturizer Hernandez says, "It retains skin's moisture and is hydrating, firming and leaves your skin with a beautiful glow." It should be your go-to formula starting a month before the big day: Use it daily both morning and night," advises the esthetician. Revitalift Volume Filler Moisturizer, $25, L'Oréal Paris

While technically not a product, Hernandez strongly advises booking a pre-nuptial microdermabrasion session. (There are at-home microderm kits available too.) "A week before, microdermabrasion is really essential and great to do on the face, neck and chest, hands and even back, depending on the dress," she says. "Doing this will allow the skin to look smoother, more firm and allow makeup application to look better, especially for those photos." Consider adding an oxygen treatment for super youthful, rejuvenated skin.

It's almost guaranteed to leave skin more radiant, bright, and refreshed, especially with continued use. Wild Rose Vitamin C Petal Peel, $64, Korres

"It goes on with a consistency similar to Vaseline, yet liquefies on contact, dissolving stubborn mascara and lipstick in an instant." Moisturizing cleanser, $16, Albolene available at Walmart

"Because it's best to lie down so the mask doesn't slip off, this also means you'll have a few minutes of R&R when you really need it in those days leading up to the big day."
