There are certain stone shapes that instantly come to mind when dreaming about an engagement ring. Emerald, oval, cushion, pear, round, and princess cuts are all-time favorites from platinum and yellow-gold settings to contemporary takes set in rose gold or a mix of metals. Then there are more uniquely shaped engagement rings which have become increasingly popular with modern brides such as colored stones, hexagon shapes and east-west settings. If you’re the type to feel drawn to the latter, trillion-shaped stones are a stunning and unique style of engagement ring to consider.

A trillion-cut ring is a great way to save money without sacrificing size. Trillion-cuts have larger surface areas, allowing them to appear bigger than other cuts of the same carat size.

You may be more familiar with trillion-shaped stones as accents to more popular cuts like emerald or square diamonds and gemstones, but the triangular shape is beyond striking as the main event, whether as a solitaire or multi-stone ring. You’ll find the three-sided stones available with round or pointed edges (aka curved or uncurved) and in a range of settings, such as a two-stone ring, a double band, an off-kilter mounting, or halo accent. No matter what setting or band ultimately seals the deal, a trillion-cut stone is a great (but feasible) way to set your bling apart from the engagement rings that saturate your Insta feed. "Trillion cuts are rare in the sense that they aren't as plentiful in the market, but that is more so due to the lower demand for them and less about their availability as a natural resource," assures Kim Kanary, the senior vice president of marketing and brand management at JTV.

If you’re a price-conscious shopper, a trillion-cut gemstone or smaller diamond is a great alternative that still feels incredibly special and modern. As the stone shape continues to trend, more and more designers are offering dainty styles, whether sleek and minimal or accented by a couple of tiny side stones. These restrained versions are likewise perfect for the low-key bride whose all about subtlety but still wants a stylish engagement ring. Vrai is a retailer that offers a stunning collection of trillion-cut engagement rings in an array of settings, metals, and band options. What to Look for When Choosing a Trillion-Shaped Engagement Ring

Stone

Not only are trillion cuts eye-catching, but they also offer plenty of benefits. "Trillion-cut diamonds offer a high degree of brilliance and fire, and the cut can also hide inclusions fairly well. The superior hardness of diamond makes it a durable and reliable stone for everyday wear," assures Kanary. If you're considering a less traditional (or more colorful) stone, Kanary recommends sapphires, rubies, or even morganite for your trillion ring, as these gems also provide a high degree of durability for the ultra-sharp cut. "It's important to be careful with less durable stones in rings, but a secure setting and continual care can help ensure your stone is protected for a lifetime!"

Setting

Due to its more fragile nature, a trillion-cut stone needs a setting that will protect it from wear and tear. "Because trillion cuts have three pointed ends, they can be susceptible to durability issues," Kanary warns. "Thus, it's important to find a setting that protects those three termination points to avoid any chipping." For this reason, a bezel setting is ideal for trillion-cut rings because the metal fully encompasses the stone. But, this doesn't mean a bezel-set ring is your only option as there are other ways to ensure your stone stays protected. A halo is another way to add some extra security (and sparkle). Plus, certain modifications allow you to opt for more simple settings like a solitaire. "Some trillions are actually cut with curved edges to avoid this issue, which means you can rest a little more secure regarding the durability of your stone," explains Kanary.

Style

If you're a bride who is considering a trillion-cut engagement ring, you're already unafraid to step outside of the box. Whether you opt for something daring and bold or something more minimal, embrace your personal style while being mindful of design aspects that will keep your stone safe. "One of the most exciting aspects of selecting an engagement ring is that it can be completely unique to your personal tastes! The style can be everything from a simple solitaire to an asymmetrical two-stone ring to a solitaire with a halo and pavé diamonds," says Kanary. "Make sure to consider how your preferences can be achieved while ensuring the style of the ring protects your trillion-cut diamond, as the points of the triangular cut can be vulnerable to chipping."

FAQs

Are trillion-cut diamonds more expensive than a round- or cushion-cut diamond? "Round brilliant diamonds, because of their high demand, typically hold the highest price per carat on the market. All other factors being equal, trillion-cut diamonds will be less expensive than rounds and most other cuts due to their lower demand," Kanary explains.

How many facets do trillion-cut diamonds typically have? "Trillion cuts can have anywhere from 31 to 50 facets, depending on how the stone is set. Stones used as center stones typically have more facets and a more convex or rounded shape to them," says Kanary.

Do trillion-cut engagement rings hold their value? "If you consider the four Cs in diamond grading—cut, clarity, color, and carat weight—they all have a coordinating impact on the diamond's value. When it comes to cut, the quality of the cut is much more important than the type of cut. The value of the type of cut is largely dependent upon what is currently trending," Kanary advises. "The good news is that all things being equal, they can be less expensive than other diamond cuts. This also means that you may purchase a trillion-cut engagement ring, and future popularity could greatly increase its market value."

What are the benefits of selecting a trillion-cut diamond? "It has a larger face-up surface than almost any other diamond. So, a 1-carat trillion-cut diamond is going to look bigger than nearly any other 1-carat diamond. Because of its lower price per carat, you are able to get a much bigger-looking diamond for a better value, all other quality factors being equal," states Kanary.
