Meghan Markle's sparkling three-stone engagement ring gifted by Prince Harry just a few years ago instantly spurred a resurgence of the classic engagement ring style. Got to love the Meghan Markle effect! Designed by Prince Harry himself, the center three-carat cushion-cut diamond from Botswana, is flanked by two round diamonds that belonged to Prince Harry’s mother, Princess Diana, on a yellow-gold band.
Made by Cleave and Company (the Queen's preferred jeweler) the meaningful ring design—which is a major departure from Kate Middleton’s stunning sapphire engagement ring—is now one of the most coveted among brides-to-be, with classic, modern, and fashion-forward designs flooding the market. What’s more, as Harry’s thoughtful design proves, three-stone engagement rings come with deeper meaning, traditionally symbolizing friendship, love, and fidelity—a perfect choice for couples who want their engagement story to be filled with meaning that is unique to their relationship.
For something unconventional, stray from three white diamonds and incorporate color into your ring design with yellow, salt and pepper, or raw diamonds or gemstones like emeralds, opals, or pearls.
Solitaire, two-stone, and double-band engagement rings have been some of the more popular designs for modern brides-to-be, but a three-stone engagement ring (also known as a trinity or trilogy ring) can appear just as contemporary as current designs. If you’re drawn to a modern-day version of the classic ring style, geometric stones like emerald, hexagon, square, shield, trillion, and Asscher-cut diamonds appear sleek and angular. For the alternative bride, unique settings will make a three-stone ring really stand out whether you go for a mix of stone cuts side-by-side, opt for a double band design, or vertically stacked stones for a truly modern look.

For more traditional tastes, round, cushion, princess, oval, marquise, and pear stones are lovely in combination whether you opt for all of the same stone or mix and match with different cuts. For a more budget-conscious ring style, a three-stone ring with a center stone and side baguettes will cost a lot less than three sizeable stones. Or, you can consider gemstones as a money-saving option that will make your ring stand out like the best of them. Vintage rings are another way to stand out and save a little cash—many Edwardian, Victorian, and Art Deco styles used smaller diamonds which come in well under $5,000.

What to Look for When Choosing a Three-Stone Engagement Ring
When curating the details of your engagement ring, keep in mind that the metal selection will determine the overall style that your bling will exude. Go for yellow or white gold for a classic piece or mix your metals for a more bold look. "The white gold and rose gold pairing create a very modern and feminine aesthetic," Connie Hung suggests.
When choosing a three-stone engagement ring, all eyes are on the stones. Be intentional about the diamonds or gemstones you select and ensure that they complement one another. "When choosing a three-stone diamond engagement ring, make sure the diamonds are matching in color and clarity," states Hung.
Whether its with the metal, the setting, or the stones, there's a variety of unique ways to make your three-stone ring stand out in a crowd. One of our favorite ways brides do this is by choosing a colored gemstone, such as a sapphire or emerald, accompanied by two diamonds. "Selecting a different gemstone instead of a diamond as a center stone also makes the ring stand out," Hung says. Whatever you say "yes!" to, incorporate your own personal style and flair.
- What is the price range of three-stone engagement rings? "The price range of a three-stone engagement ring can range very widely," says Hung. "If all three stones are roughly 0.5 carats each, the diamond can be priced around $7,500 for VS1 GIA certified stones. For a one carat center and two smaller diamonds on the side, the ring can start at around $2,500 for lab grown diamonds."
- How can I make my three-stone engagement ring look more unique? "To make it unique, we recommend implementing two tones of gold: white gold and rose gold have been increasingly popular," informs Hung.
- What different colored stone combinations look good with three-stone engagement rings? "Our favorite we've made has been an ice blue sapphire surrounded by a halo and band of diamonds," Hung says.
