Meghan Markle Walks Herself Down the Aisle

Ahhh, the royal wedding that changed the game... After months of frenzied anticipation, May 19, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's wedding day, finally arrived. The couple wed at St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle, where the now- Duchess of Sussex stunned in a Givenchy wedding dress and the couple bucked tradition at every turn. In true Meghan Markle style, the self-proclaimed feminist walked part of the way down the aisle by herself after her father dropped out at the last minute (don't ask). Then, she was met halfway by Prince Charles, who took her arm and ultimately gave her away to his son.

If there was any question that this wasn't your average royal wedding, it was answered the moment Karen Gibson and the Kingdom Choir began to sing a soulful rendition of "Stand by Me" at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's ceremony. The performance was moving enough to bring you tears.

Sure, it didn't have the international fanfare of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's nuptials, but this royal wedding might've proved to be the biggest and most historical of them all this year. In September, Queen Elizabeth II's cousin, Lord Ivar Mountbatten, married his partner, marking the first same-sex wedding within the royal family.

“Well we did it finally!” Lord Ivar wrote on Instagram, captioning a series of wedding photos of himself and his new husband, James Coyle.

Princess Eugenie Reveals Her Scoliosis Scar

Shortly after Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced their engagement, Harry's cousin, Princess Eugenie, revealed that she was also engaged to her longtime love, Jack Brooksbank. The two wed on October 12 at St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle (yes, the same venue as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex), where Eugenie revealed her Peter Pilotto wedding dress and a sentimental surprise.

The gown's dipped back intentionally showed off Eugenie's scar from a childhood scoliosis operation. "I’m patron of [the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital Appeal] and I had an operation when I was 12 on my back," she explained to ITV. "It’s a lovely way to honor the people who looked after me and a way of standing up for young people who also go through this," Eugenie said of her choice to reveal the scar on her wedding day.

Meghan Markle's Wedding Look Inspires Another Royal Bride

Recognize this regal look? Princess Deniz of Bavaria seemingly drew inspiration from Meghan Markle's royal wedding look for her own nuptials. The royal bride tied the knot on September 1 in St. Moritz, Switzerland, where she went with a long-sleeved gown, low bun, and natural makeup—just like the Duchess of Sussex.

In yet another royal wedding, German Duchess Sophie Württemberg and Count Maximilien of Andigné tied the knot on October 20 at Saint-Quirin church in the Castle of Tegernsee, near the Bavarian Alps. The bride's wedding day look also seemed to mimic Meghan Markle's, from her 3/4-sleeved dress to her gorgeous tiara.

Maybe this wasn't the year of the royal wedding... Maybe it was the year of Meghan Markle's wedding dress!
