1945: Shirley Temple and John Agar
Actors John Agar and Shirley Temple tied the knot in 1945 against her mother's wishes, as Temple was only 17 at the time. The two met through a friend, who arranged for Agar to escort Temple to a Hollywood party. The former child star wore a gorgeous satin wedding dress when she married Agar in her family's home, although the two eventually split in 1949.
1947: Queen Elizabeth and Philip Mountbatten
Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on November 20, 2017. The two met nearly a century ago, when Elizabeth, who was only 13 at the time, visited the Royal Navy College (where Philip was studying) with her family. Phillip eventually proposed after a monthlong vacation at Balmoral with her family, but her father insisted that the engagement be kept secret until her 21st birthday. The two tied the knot at Westminster Abbey in London as Princess Elizabeth and Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten, where Elizabeth wore a duchesse-satin long-sleeved wedding gown with floral embroidery and crystal and 10,000 pearl appliqués.
1950: Elizabeth Taylor and Conrad Hilton
Elizabeth Taylor's first of eight weddings was to Conrad Hilton on May 13, 1950. Taylor, who was only 18 at the time, wore a Helen Rose gown, which sold at a London auction for $187,931 in 2013. The two split a year later.
1952: Ronald Reagan and Nancy Davis
Actor and future President Ronald Reagan married his second wife, actress Nancy Davis, on May 4, 1952, at the Little Brown Church in the Valley in Los Angeles. The two remained married for the rest of their lives, working through his two-term presidency together and sharing two children, Ron and Patti.
1953: John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis
Jacqueline Onassis and former President John F. Kennedy were married on September 12, 1953 in St. Mary’s Church in Newport, Rhode Island in what might have been the most iconic wedding of the century. The former first lady stunned in an Ann Lowe gown for the big day, which even received a blessing from the pope. The couple remained married until Kennedy's assassination in 1963.
1954: Marlyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio
The baseball superstar and the iconic actress tied the knot on January 14, 1954. The two were married at San Francisco City Hall, where they were bombarded by reporters and fans after Monroe accidentally revealed her wedding details to a colleague. The two split in October 1954, only 274 days after the wedding.
1956: Prince Rainier of Monaco and Grace Kelly
American actress Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier III of Monaco married in an elaborate two-day wedding in April aboard the SS Constitution on the French Riviera. Kelly's dress, which was designed by MGM costume designer Helen Rose, remains a dress design inspiration to this day. The royal couple stayed married until Kelly's death in 1982.
1967: Elvis Presley and Priscilla Presley
Priscilla Wagner met rock legend Elvis Presley in 1959 when she was only 14 years old. They married on May 1, 1967 at the Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas and had one child, Lisa Marie, together. The two split in 1972.
1969: John Lennon and Yoko Ono
John Lennon was still married to his first wife, Cynthia, when he met Yoko Ono in 1966. Three years later, after leaving his first wife, the two tied the knot in 1969 in a quick, 10-minute ceremony in a British Consulate office. The two remained married until Lennon's death in 1980.
1970: Stevie Wonder and Syreeta Wright
Singer-songwriters Stevie Wonder and Syreeta Wright married in September 1970. The two wrote a handful of songs together before their divorce 18 months later in 1972.
1971: Mick Jagger and Bianca Perez Morena de Macias
Rolling Stone lead singer Mick Jagger married Bianca Pérez-Mora Macias in 1971 at the Chapel of St. Anne in Saint-Tropez, southern France, where Bianca donned her iconic bridal suit. The rock couple later divorced in 1978.
1975: Greg Allman and Cher
Pop icon Cher and Allman Brothers Band musician Gregg Allman's relationship was fast and furious. The two met in early 1975, shortly after Cher's split from former husband Sonny Bono, and married later that year on June 30. Nine days later, Cher filed for divorce citing his drug and alcohol addictions as the cause of the split.
1977: Donald and Ivana Trump
We hate to say it, but this one was a biggie. Donald Trump married his first model wife, Ivana Zelníčková, in an over-the-top ceremony on April 7, 1977. The New York socialites had three children you might recognize: Ivanka, Eric, and Donald Jr. The two split in 1991.
1979: Rod Stewart & Alana Hamilton
Actress and model Alana Hamilton married British rockstar Rod Stewart on April 6, 1979 at the L'Eermitage Restaurant in Beverly Hills, California. The two had two children together, but divorced in 1984.
1980: Karen Carpenter and Thomas Burris
Karen Carpenter of The Carpenters and real estate developer Thomas Burris wed at the Beverly Hills Hotel in August of 1980. The bride performed a new song, "Because We Are in Love," at the wedding that was later released in 1981. However, the marriage didn't last long and the couple divorced in 1982.
1981: Lady Diana Spencer and Prince Charles
Prince Charles and Lady Diana's televised wedding was the definition of iconic. The royal wedding took place on July 29, at Saint Paul's Cathedral in London. Diana's stunning gown was made of ivory silk taffeta and antique lace that once belonged to Queen Mary, and was hand-embroidered with mother-of-pearl sequins and 10,000 pearls. Despite the flawless nuptials, the two split in 1996, just a year before her tragic death.
1983: Carrie Fisher and Paul Simon
Star Wars actress Carrie Fisher and singer Paul Simon tied the knot in August 1983, but divorced a year later due to issues with drug and alcohol abuse. Though they never remarried, the two dated on and off before Fisher's second marriage to Bryan Lourd.
1985: Madonna and Sean Penn
The pop icon and actor Sean Penn tied the knot on August 16, 1985, Madonna's birthday. The singer filed for divorce in 1989, and it was said Penn's angry outbursts were the cause of their split.
1986: Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver
The Terminator actor and journalist Maria Shriver first met at a charity tennis tournament being held at her mother's home in 1977, and tied the knot nine years later on April 26, 1986, in Hyannis, Massachusetts. The two have four children together, but divorced just last year.
1987: Lenny Kravitz and Lisa Bonet
Singer and musician Lenny Kravitz eloped with actress Lisa Bonet in Las Vegas in 1987, on Bonet’s 20th birthday. The two divorced in 1993, but share a daughter together named Zoë (you may have heard of her). Bonnet recently revealed that she is now married to her longtime love, Game of Thrones actor Jason Momoa.
1988: Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson
The Forrest Gump star and his wife's marriage has withstood the test of time—the two will celebrate their 30th anniversary in April. Hanks and Wilson (we wonder if her last name is a coincidence...) tied the knot on April 30, 1988.
1990: Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise
Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise first met in November 1989, while filming Days of Thunder. The two married one year later on Christmas Eve 1990 in Telluride, Colorado. The acting legends adopted two children together, but split in 2001. Kidman married her second husband, Keith Urban, five years later in 2006.
1991: John Travolta and Kelly Preston
The Grease actor and his wife, actress Kelly Preston, first met in 1987 while filming The Experts. The two tied the knot on September 5, 1991 in a wedding ceremony at the Hotel de Crillon in Paris. The two had a second ceremony later under the Church of Scientology.
1992: David Bowie and Iman
Late rockstar David Bowie and model Iman married on April 24, 1992, in a small civil ceremony in Switzerland. The adorable couple remained married until Bowie's death in 2016 and had one daughter together, Alexandria.
1993: Mariah Carey and Tommy Mottola
Mariah Carey married her former producer Tommy Mottola at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York on June 5, 1993 in an over-the-top $500,000 affair inspired by Princess Diana and Prince Charles's wedding. (The bride even wore a $25,000 Princess Diana-inspired Vera Wang gown!) Some of their A-list guests included Barbra Streisand, Michael Bolton, Bruce Springsteen, Dick Clark, and Ozzy Osbourne.
1995: Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson
Mötley Crüe musician Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson eloped in Cancun, Mexico in 1995, just days after they met. The couple stayed together until 2008, and share two sons together, Brandon and Dylan.
1996: Prince and Mayte Garcia
Late musician Prince first met Mayte Garcia backstage in Germany after he saw a tape of her dancing. After four years of dating, the two married on February 14, 1996. The two had one child together, a son, who died shortly after his birth due to a genetic disorder. The couple divorced in 2000.
1997: Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker
Step aside, Mr. Big. Sex and the City's Sarah Jessica Parker and Ferris Bueller's Day Off actor Matthew Broderick tied the knot in the most Carrie Bradshaw-appropriate wedding: A civil ceremony in a historic synagogue on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, where Parker donned a chic black wedding dress for the occasion.
1998: Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber
After separating from actor Richard Gere in 1995, supermodel Cindy Crawford married former model Rande Gerber on May 29, 1998. The family continued their modeling dynasty, giving birth to two children, Kaia and Presley, both of whom are now models.
1999: David and Victoria Beckham
Spice Girls singer Victoria Beckham and soccer superstar David Beckham tied the knot in a very Posh $800,000 affair at Ireland's Luttrellstown Castle on July 4, 1999. The two are coming up on 20 years together, and share four children: Brooklyn, Romeo James, Cruz, and Harper Seven.
2000: Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston
Who can forget this wedding? Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt tied the knot in a $1 million affair on July 29, 2000 in Malibu. Naturally, all of Aniston's Friends co-stars were in attendance. (Do you think Ross was jealous?) Sadly, the couple split in 2005.
2002: Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey
Actress and singer Jessica Simpson married former 98 Degrees singer Nick Lachey on October 26, 2002. Their nuptials inspired a reality TV show, Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica. The two split in 2006.
2003: Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin
Chris Martin, the lead singer of Coldplay, and actress Gwyneth Paltrow married in 2003 and only officially divorced in 2016—just one year before Paltrow became engaged to Glee producer Brad Falchuk. At the time of her divorce, the actress shared in a statement on her blog, Goop, "We have come to the conclusion that while we love each other very much we will remain separate. We are, however, and always will be a family, and in many ways we are closer than we have ever been."
2004: Britney Spears and Kevin Federline
The pop legend and the former backup dancer married in a surprise wedding on September 18, 2004. The two invited guests to what was assumed to be an engagement party, where they arrived to find Spears in a $26,000 strapless silk gown. The two were married for three years before a dramatic divorce and custody battle.
2005: Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner
Two months after the couple broke the news of their engagement, actors Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner tied the knot in a quiet ceremony in Turks and Caicos on June 29, 2005—and announced shortly thereafter that they were expecting. The two separated in 2015, but didn't file for divorce until 2017. The two share three children together, Violet, 12, Seraphina, 9, and Sameuel, 6.
2006: Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes
On November 18, 2006, the Top Gun actor and the Dawson's Creek actress tied the knot in Bracciano, Italy. The two had their ceremony in a 15th-century Odescalchi Castle, and the bride wore two different dresses, both designed by Giorgio Armani. The $3 million affair was filled with A-list guests, including Brooke Shields, Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, fellow Scientologists John Travolta and Kelly Preston, David and Victoria Beckham, Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez, and a handful of other VIPs. 2007: Eva Longoria and Tony Parker
Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria and NBA player Tony Parker married in a civil ceremony in Paris, France on July 6, 2007. The two split in 2011, amongst rumors that the basketball player had been unfaithful. However, the two sited "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for their split. Longoria has since married José Antonio Bastón and is now pregnant with her first child.
2008: Beyoncé and Jay-Z
Modern music legends Beyoncé and Jay-Z tied the knot on April 4, 2008 inside Jay’s New York City penthouse. The two kept their lavish wedding relatively small, inviting only 40 guests to the big day. The couple now share three children together, Blue Ivy, 6, and twins Rumi and Sir, 1.
2009: Gisele Bündchen and Tom Brady
NFL star Tom Brady and supermodel Gisele Bündchen married on February 26, 2009 at the Santa Monica Catholic Church outside of Los Angeles, California in a private 20-person ceremony, before jetting off to Bündchen's Costa Rica property for a second celebration.
