One way to take skin care off your wedding to-do list is to start a daily serum habit ASAP. Why not a moisturizer? Dermatologist Dr. Mona A. Gohara explains: "A moisturizer contains emollients to hydrate the skin and forms a barrier to help the skin retain its hydration. A facial serum is thinner and lighter than a moisturizer, and has smaller molecules to penetrate deeper in the skin to address specific skin care issues."
Dr. Gohara recommends beginning to use a serum a year before your wedding, or if you don't have the time, at least three months before the big day. It will help your skin fight against the heavy makeup you might be wearing at all of the events leading up to your nuptials (black cat eyes for your bachelorette party, professional makeup for your rehearsal dinner).
Joshua Zeichner, MD, the director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, adds about the use of serums: "They are designed specifically to deliver active ingredients. Some serums are hydrating, while others may provide antioxidants, skin brightening ingredients, or collagen stimulators. Brides might not have much time before their wedding to get their skin into tip-top shape. Serums can deliver effective ingredients to achieve a particular skin care goal as quickly as possible."
