What do Jennifer Aniston, Mila Kunis, Cameron Diaz, and Beyoncé all have in common? Aside from sounding like a dream celebrity bridal party, they all pulled off hush-hush weddings that left everyone's heads spinning! As stars know all too well, it's hard to keep a secret in Hollywood. With paparazzi, blabbermouth friends, and the always-speculative press, it's rare to completely pull the wool over everyone's eyes. And yet, somehow, people like Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds managed to get hitched without anyone even knowing they were engaged to begin with.
With Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux's absolute shocker of a wedding on August 5, we decided to look back on other memorable nuptials that took us completely off-guard. Some, like Jen and Justin's, were a surprise even to the guests. Others, like Zooey Deschanel and Jacob Pechenik's, were so undercover that it took months for the news of their marriage to even surface. What's amazing is that many of these under-the-radar affairs were total blowout celebrations, with hundreds of guests that managed to stay mum about the whole thing—and barely have a photo to show for it.
When all eyes are on you, it's only natural to want a wedding that keeps you completely out of the spotlight. Here, we focus on the intimate parties and secret ceremonies that show how even the biggest celebrities still know how to pull a fast one on us. From Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie to Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher, all of these megawatt stars planned weddings that belie their big-time fame.
Amanda Seyfried and Thomas Sadoski
During an appearance on the Late Late Show, Sadoski accidentally revealed that he and Seyfried had tied the knot after referring to the actress as his wife before showing off his shiny wedding band to the audience. “We eloped...we just took off into the country with an officiant and just the two of us, and we did our thing... We had a great day. It was perfect," he revealed. The couple confirmed their engagement in September 2016, and are expecting their first child later this year.
Dave Franco and Alison Brie
Franco and Brie were married last week following their engagement in August 2015. Franco popped the question with an Irene Neuwirth–designed rose-gold ring set; the actress revealed her stunning rock at the premiere of Sleeping With Other People. The couple dated for three years prior to tying the knot.
Margot Robbie and Tom Ackerley
The actress and longtime boyfriend were married during a secret ceremony in Byron Bay, located in Australia, in December 2016. Rumors of a wedding swirled after the actress arrived in her home country wearing a T-shirt that read "Say 'I Do' Down Under." The couple, who never announced an engagement, first met in 2013 while on the set of Suite Francaise. PDA-filled pics of the couple surfaced later in June 2014.
Hannah Davis and Derek Jeter
The model and retired New York Yankee wed last year during an outdoor ceremony at the Meadowood Napa Valley Resort in St. Helena, California. Davis donned a gorgeous Vera Wang mermaid bridal gown that featured a plunging back, while the groom wore a black and white Nigel Curtiss tux. The reception took place inside an open greenhouse, with fewer than 100 guests in attendance.
Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux
We waited almost three years for this smoking-hot duo to tie the knot, and despite incessant curiosity and speculation, they managed to have an undetected wedding right in their backyard. Seventy-five guests including Aniston's Friends costars Courteney Cox and Lisa Kudrow, as well as Chelsea Handler, Jason Bateman, Emily Blunt and John Krasinski, Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi, Will Arnett, Tobey Maguire and wife Jennifer Meyer, and Jimmy Kimmel attended what they thought was going to be Theroux's birthday party. Instead, they were treated to an all-night-long wedding (MOH Cox partied until 3 a.m.!) complete with Sia performing "Chandelier" for their first dance.
Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher
Somehow, despite the rampant wedding rumors that surrounded these two after their February 2014 engagement, they managed to get married without anyone noticing. The former That '70s Show costars exchanged vows in a hush-hush ceremony at the Secret Garden at Parrish Ranch in Oak Glen, California, over the Fourth of July weekend. Only one report threatened to spoil their secret.
Billy Joel and Alexis Roderick
After being together for "the longest time," Joel and his girlfriend of six years got to have a fun surprise wedding at his estate in the Hamptons! The singer-songwriter's spokeswoman revealed that Joel and Roderick "surprised guests at their annual July 4th party by exchanging vows in front of their family and close friends." The whole thing was disguised as their annual Fourth of July Party. We're sure there were plenty of sparklers in celebration!
Zooey Deschanel and Jacob Pechenik
The New Girl star has had quite a year! In January, she announced that she and her producer boyfriend Jacob Pechenik were engaged and expecting a baby. In August, her rep gave us another double whammy with this statement: "I am thrilled to confirm that Zooey Deschanel and her husband, Jacob Pechenik, are new parents to a beautiful healthy baby girl." Husband?! It turns out, court documents show that the pair married on June 25, meaning they kept their marriage quiet for more than a month. Now, that's what we call impressive.
Nikki Reed and Ian Somerhalder
These two got married after a whirlwind nine-month courtship (and four-month engagement). Even though that's the amount of time it takes most couples to plan a wedding, they managed to coordinate a gorgeously rustic affair in Topanga Canyon in April 2015, to which Reed wore a Claire Pettibone wedding dress. Perhaps we wouldn't have been so stunned by their wedding if it didn't happen so quickly!
Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Tasha McCauley
Let's just say that the details of this wedding remain secret, even eight months after it happened! JGL married his girlfriend in the backyard of their home in December 2014, and that's all we know. "I have a girlfriend but I tend not to really like to talk about it in public," he said on SiriusXM's Howard Stern Show in September 2013. "She is not in show business." Say no more, Joseph!
Scarlett Johansson and Romain Dauriac
Is she a secret agent and an actress?! Johansson married her journalist fiancé Romain Dauriac shortly after giving birth to their daughter Rose in September 2014, but they didn't announce their marriage until that December! She'd been spotted wearing a wedding ring, but stayed mum in the meantime. That's what we call dedication to secrecy.
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt
After nine long years and six adorable children, the ultimate A-list couple married at their French estate, Chateau Miraval, with just their closest friends and family (including their six children) in attendance in August 2014. Not only did the whole event happen without anyone realizing it, but it was deeply personalized—all of their kids wrote and drew on Angelina's veil!
Kelly Rowland and Tim Witherspoon
The former Destiny's Child was cryptic about her wedding plans after getting engaged to her manager in November 2013. "I want it to be small, just him, myself, and God, and just a beautiful setting and just call it a day," she said of her ideal vows two months before her wedding. It turns out, that's exactly what she got. The two had a super-private wedding in Costa Rica in May 2014. Around 30 guests (including probable bridesmaid Beyoncé) attended the intimate nuptials, which didn't make the news until after they'd ended.
Stacy Keibler and Jared Pobre
Keibler and Pobre had a March 2014 wedding that was totally unexpected for a number of reasons. Fresh off her high-profile romance with George Clooney, her ensuing relationship with Pobre in fall 2013 was so much more low-key that many forgot she'd moved on. It helps that Pobre, a tech CEO whom Keibler had been friends with for years, was a non-celeb, which cooled the rampant wedding talk that surrounded Keibler and Clooney. Additionally, the wedding was a surprise to even Keibler and Pobre's families—they announced their plans to marry during the plane ride to what everyone thought was a joint family vacation. All of those factors added up to a true bombshell once the news broke.
Leighton Meester and Adam Brody
Millennials everywhere flipped out when Meester and Brody, the former stars of Gossip Girl and The OC, respectively, announced their engagement just 10 months after they started dating. An intensely private couple, they were rarely seen together, which only added to their mystique. A mere three months after they got engaged, the comely couple got married in a very discreet ceremony in February 2014. With only a mere "yes" from Brody to confirm his marriage and a to-die-for close-up photo of Meester's engagement and wedding rings, we know one thing for sure about this otherwise under-wraps marriage: They're masters at keeping secrets.
Kelly Clarkson and Brandon Blackstock
Though the singer and her now-husband Brandon Blackstock originally planned a blowout wedding, she announced in August 2013 that they'd scrapped their plans in favor of an elopement. Just two months later, Clarkson tweeted that she and Blackstock tied the knot at Blackberry Farm in Walland, Tennessee, with just Blackstock's two children in attendance. Although she'd kept the exact wedding date and details under wraps, the actual event wasn't a major surprise: She'd previously said that she wanted to get married before Christmas. Mission accomplished!
Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard
By the time Bell and longtime fiancé Dax Shepard finally got married in October 2013, it was more of a shock that they'd actually gone through with it—and how they did it. Engaged since late 2009, the duo famously waited to get married until same-sex couples could, as well. And after Bell "re-proposed" in June after the Supreme Court overturned the Defense of Marriage Act, we assumed a celebrity-filled wedding was in the works. But Bell and Shepard instead exchanged vows at the Beverly Hills County Clerk's Office on the fly. They'd gone to the office just to obtain a marriage license, but then took up a court employee's offer to marry them on the spot in a nearby courtroom.
Kerry Washington and Nnamdi Asomugha
This one really made our heads spin. The Scandal star married her NFL player boyfriend in a super-secret ceremony in Hailey, Idaho, on June 24, 2013—and the news didn't leak until two weeks later! Considering that practically no one even knew they were dating, let alone engaged, this one came as quite a surprise.
Zoe and Marco Saldana
What?! As if out of nowhere, reports surfaced in September 2013 that Saldana had married artist Perego in London that June. "It was super small but very romantic and beautiful," a source said at the time. Three months later, the actress finally confirmed the news during a fun interview with Jimmy Kimmel.
Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds
We knew that the Green Lantern costars were dating, but their engagement was such a secret that Lively didn't wear her seven-carat light pink oval diamond engagement ring in public until after their shocking September 2012 wedding. They managed to keep all details of their romantic nuptials at Boone Hall Plantation and Gardens in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, quiet as they planned the wedding.
Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem
Back before they got married, the burning-hot Spanish couple would barely acknowledge their relationship, let alone their engagement. It's not terribly shocking, then, that their July 2010 nuptials were a total secret. They got married in a small, private ceremony held at a friend's home in the Bahamas and waited two weeks before announcing the news.
Harrison Ford and Calista Flockhart
It took eight years of dating for the actors to finally get married, but they definitely made it count. Following a yearlong engagement, they tied the knot in June 2010 at the Governor's Mansion in Santa Fe, New Mexico, with just a handful of guests in attendance.
Beyoncé and Jay Z
No one had suspected an imminent wedding until the power couple was spotted picking up their marriage license in New York in April 2008. After that, the April 4 date was immediately assumed, as they were both born on the fourth of a month. All signs pointed to an official union, but it took six months for Beyoncé to address it in public. Props for keeping mum, but the real surprise was how long they avoided mentioning it.
Julia Roberts and Danny Moder
The Runaway Bride from the movies was anything but when she married her director husband on the sly in July 2002. After only telling friends they were gathering for a late-night drink at Roberts' Taos, New Mexico, ranch over Fourth of July weekend that year, the low-key couple surprised them all by exchanging vows. That America's Sweetheart could pull off a surprise wedding was a testament that any celebrity could do it—and boy, have they followed suit.
Kate Bosworth and Michael Polish
Bosworth and Polish were married in August 2013 during a ceremony in Rock Creek in Montana. The night before the exchange of nuptials, the couple hosted a modern hoedown featuring country singers Kelly Willis and Bruce Robison. On the big day, Bosworth donned an Oscar de la Renta gown and arrived at the venue in a horse-drawn carriage. During the ceremony, guests were treated to hiking, horseback riding, and fly fishing.
Cameron Diaz and Benji Madden
Diaz and the Good Charlotte member were married in 2015 during an intimate ceremony in their Beverly Hills home. The couple married in their living room, and Drew Barrymore, along with Nicole Richie, served as bridesmaids. Guests included Gwyneth Paltrow, Toni Collette, and Judd Apatow. Lionel Richie, naturally, took the stage and sang a surprise song for the couple.
Gisele Bündchen and Tom Brady
Little is still known about Bündchen's and Brady's marriage in 2009, except for a few bits and pieces the couple shares every now and then. They married late February at Santa Monica's Catholic Church in front of immediate family. Their April follow-up wedding included extended family, with the couple hosting a gorgeous ceremony at the model's Costa Rican estate. The two met after being set up on a blind date by a mutual friend in 2006.
Natalie Portman and Benjamin Millepied
The actress and French choreographer married in 2012 during a strictly vegan ceremony, in keeping with Portman's diet. The actress wore a traditional white gown from Rodarte, which she paired with a crown made of white wildflowers; the groom donned a midnight blue tux. The exchange of nuptials took place under a rustic Jewish chuppah, similar to a canopy, made of twigs. They were surrounded by family and friends, including Ivanka Trump and Macaulay Culkin.
Mary-Kate Olsen and Olivier Sarkozy
Olsen shocked Hollywood after news broke of her surprise wedding to longtime boyfriend Olivier Sarkozy. The couple wed in New York City in November 2015 at their private uptown Manhattan home. The exchange of nuptials occurred in front of 50 guests, and wedding invitees were allegedly told to surrender their cell phones before entering the venue. Oddly, according to the New York Post, decor consisted of "bowls and bowls filled with cigarettes."
Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka
The HIMYM star married Burtka in September 2014, and announced the news via his Twitter. “Guess what? David Burtka and I got married over the weekend," he announced on the social media platform. "In Italy. Yup, we put the ‘n’ and ‘d’ in ‘husband.’ ” Longtime director of HIMYM Pam Fryman officiated the ceremony, and both men wore Tom Ford tuxedos. The couple are parents to fraternal twins Harper Grace and Gideon Scott, 6.
Olivia Palermo and Johannes Huebl
The style maven married the German model June 2014 during an intimate ceremony in Bedford, New York. “We really wanted to keep this beautiful day very private and special to us and enjoyed the whole day with our family and two friends. Bedford is such an amazing and romantic countryside," Palermo later announced on her Web site. She pieced together an outfit by Carolina Herrera, which included a cashmere sweater, while the groom donned a Marc Anthony Hamburg suit.
