A bride’s checklist can be like a black hole—it’s vast, it’s always expanding, and it has a way of eating up time. Fortunately, despite adding to the never-ending list of to-dos, some of those tasks can be empowering and fun—such as picking out your wedding lingerie.

From gorgeous bras and panties to bodysuits and beyond, there are tons of plus-size lingerie options to make you feel sexy and special on your wedding night. But of course, narrowing down those options just adds to the growing bridal checklist. To help, we consulted Jonathon Yeomans, a Senior Design and Product Manager for Avenue and City Chic.

"Lace and satin pieces are a popular choice–lace and embroidered bra and panty sets with garters or a satin long nighty or slip can be gorgeous," he says. "Ivory and soft pink are the most popular colors, but for the wedding night, a bride can also go with other colors or even sexy lingerie if that is what she feels the most beautiful wearing. A bride should feel totally confident and comfortable on her special night."

What To Look for in Plus-Size Bridal Lingerie

Fit and Comfort

Of course, you want to feel sexy and beautiful on your wedding night. But that doesn't mean you have to sacrifice comfort! Look for styles that feel as good as they look, such as bras that offer added push-up padding, panties with control shapewear, or teddy bodysuits with supportive seams and wires.

Consider the Dress Silhouette

"The styling should also compliment the dress, so no visible necklines or seams," Yeomans recommends. "It’s best to go with fabrications that are smooth and also have enough structure to provide the support and shaping required. Look for form-control fabrications and good quality spiral boning in corsets and long-line bras."

FAQ
  • What are the different types of lingerie?

"Bridal lingerie can cover many styles, such as luxury pieces that are designed to complement a bridal trousseau, using lace and satin, for instance. Bras and matching panties with garter belts are always popular. Bodysuits and teddies are also an option," says Yeomans.

"Most curvy brides also require styles that offer shaping & support to the body, such as control shapewear–functional garments designed to give a better silhouette to the dress itself," he continues. "These include strapless bras, push-up bras, control panties and full-body shapers–always go with fabrications that are smooth and with firm control, to smooth and support."

  • Can brides wear lingerie under their wedding dress?

"Absolutely. Many dresses have built-in corsetry to give support to the dress, so a heavily structured bra or body shaper is not always necessary–but it’s an option to wear something special which makes a bride feel beautiful," says Yeomans. "A lace strapless bra and panty will complement the dress in most cases. If the dress itself is very low cut or has a low back, then a plunge longline bra that has convertible shoulder straps to suit various necklines is the best choice."
