While there are plenty of intimate ways to pop the question, going a little over-the-top for this life-changing moment can’t hurt. Enter the engagement trip. From locking down an engagement package at a hotel to planning your own trip, picking a special location to propose can make the moment even more memorable.
Now that you’ve found your partner, picked a ring, and settled on a proposal location, the last thing to decide is where to take your lucky mate. In a 2018 study, Celebrity Cruises analyzed over one million Instagram posts from the previous 12 months with the hashtags #shesaidyes, #hesaidyes, #isaidyes, and #proposal to find out where the most popular locations are.
"It’s wonderful to be able to see the loved-up landmarks that couples from around the world are traveling to for such an important occasion," Natalie Howard, the digital marketing manager at Celebrity Cruises, said. "We see lots of couples each year choosing to pop the question abroad on our ships and we hope the research can provide inspiration for future romantic gestures.”
They narrowed the list down to the top 15 locations with two tied for 14th place. Coming in at the number one spot is Central Park, with 1,789 proposal posts on Instagram. The list goes on to include three other stateside locations and tons of romantic international locales.
Central Park, New York
From the Carousel to the iconic Bow Bridge and Bethesda Fountain, it’s no wonder Central Park rings in at number one.
Eiffel Tower, Paris
The City of Lights takes its rightful place high on the list of the most popular places to propose.
Brooklyn Bridge, New York
Proposing on the Brooklyn Bridge means you get that epic NYC skyline as your backdrop.
Grand Canyon, Arizona
The desert isn’t just a popular place for honeymoons and bachelorette weekends. Start your marriage journey at this beautiful natural wonder.
Oia, Santorini, Greece
If you choose this idyllic landscape as your proposal spot, Celebrity Cruises recommends waiting until sundown when the oranges and pinks of the sky contrast with the city’s stunning white walls for a romantic ambience.
This historic setting is perfect for taking some statement photos.
Tower Bridge, London
According to Celebrity Cruises, the Tower Bridge is the most popular London landmark for lovers, and who could blame them? The bridge overlooks so many of the city’s attractions you will have endless options for a great setting.
Sydney Opera House, Sydney
Travel down under for this picture-perfect proposal spot. Couples tend to pop the question from either under the building, across the bay, or on a boat.
If the Eiffel Tower is a little crowded on your ideal proposal day, pop over to the Louvre for an equally romantic location. It’s perfect for a Jay-Z and Beyoncé inspired engagement shoot.
Lake Louise, Banff, Canada
Outdoorsy couples don’t need to look any further than Lake Louise. This natural landscape does all the work for you. All that’s left to say is those four little words: "Will you marry me?"
The Shard, London
For panoramic views, the Shard has you covered. This skyscraper high in the clouds offers unobstructed views of London and has everything you need for an engagement trip. With a hotel to stay at and restaurants to dine in, you won’t have a problem finding a place to pop the question.
Spanish Steps, Rome
If Rome is calling your name, the city’s Spanish Steps are a perfect place to get down on one knee. This location allows you to bask in the romance of the stunning city and of your soon-to-be spouse.
Taj Mahal, Agra, India
The Mughal emperor Shah Jahan commissioned this white marble mausoleum in memory of his favorite wife in 1632, and the complex includes a mosque, guest house, and formal gardens. I think it’s safe to say there is romance in the air here always.
Griffith Observatory, Los Angeles
Come for the proposal, stay for the stars. In addition to enjoying the sweeping views of LA, you can stick around for stargazing.
Trevi Fountain, Rome
Make all your wishes come true with a proposal by the Trevi Fountain. We highly recommend throwing in a coin for good luck before you pop the question.
Table Mountain, Cape Town, South Africa
Last but not least is the stunning view from the top of Table Mountain. If you’re torn between a beachside or rustic proposal this gives you the best of both worlds. These mountain and ocean views pretty much can guarantee you’ll get a "yes!"
