"We wanted our day to feel like a small, elegant dinner party that just happened to be a wedding," explains Kris Browne, an account manager, of her decision to marry Nate Smeltz, who's in public relations, on the banks of her sister's stunning property on Connecticut's Woodridge Lake. It was the same spot where Nate had proposed only 10 weeks earlier after a whirlwind, long-distance courtship that involved talk of marriage from the beginning. To streamline the planning, the couple omitted any element that didn't add meaning ("No personalized matchbooks for us!" says the bride) and focused on the heartfelt ceremony, convivial meal, and tasteful touches like a white-on-white cake and classic rose bouquets. "Of course, we did splurge on some things," says the bride, "like a fabulous honeymoon in Turks and Caicos!"
